About Me

An independent musician/singer-songwriter, I play guitar, bass and harmonica, and am currently working on finishing up the writing and arrangements for my first solo CD project, which will ultimately become somewhat of a career retrospective for me.A brief musical history: For several years, I played in various local bands with varying degrees of success, most notably in the mid-90's as one of the founding members of Sacred Rain, with whom we released our 1994 independent CD "Angel Skies" to moderate local success.A few televised peformance spots (CITY-TV's Breakfast Television, CHCH-TV News At Noon), performance videos (Up And Coming - CKVR) and select opening gigs later, I departed the band in 1996 to take a break from the music business in general. After a lengthy musical hiatus, I began to partake in one-off local shows, sharing stages with musical friends new and old. Some were full band, others were duo acoustic venues, yet these first shows reinforced what I already knew: I missed playing, I missed the songwriting, and I missed playing music as a regular part of my life. So, fast-forward to 2006 : I am currently undertaking a brand new recording project, co-producing an independent CD of my own original songs, with the capable assistance of some wonderfully-talented musical friends I have met along the way.

Band Members: Rob Birmingham: vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, bass, harmonica. Even some drums and percussion. Then there are these fabulous folks who have agreed to help me out (okay, maybe not agreed, they've relented): Todd Pyper, John Restas, Paul Dickinson, Tim Moore, Ryan Degelder
Influences: Like most people, I have been influenced by just about everything I hear. From 60's folk-rock to the 70's classic radio rock, from 80's new wave to the 90's alt-country movement. And the current decade's mix of all of the above...Also, I am a huge proponent of Canadian music, both past and present. From those that blazed an early trail (The Guess Who, April Wine, Rush, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot) through to personal favourites like The Northern Pikes, Blue Rodeo, The Grapes Of Wrath, 54-40, Tragically Hip, Barenaked Ladies, Skydiggers, Tom Cochrane, Odds, etc. From a songwriting perspective, Canadians take a backseat to no one.
Sounds Like: a little of this and a little of that: Take a lifetime of classic AM and FM radio rock, removing all of the horrible cliches and bad lyrics first, add a pinch or two of 60's Byrdsian jangle-rock, mix in a few servings of sweet harmony-laced indie rock and some whiskey-laden alt-country, and then top it all off with a potent blend of Petty-style guitar riffs and lyrical songcraft. And then serve it all up on top of a solid base of pure Canadian rock. Oh yes, tasty, indeed...

Perception...

Perception. I've been thinking a fair bit about perception lately - for example, how we see ourselves vs. how others see us - and it's a really funny (read:peculiar) thing. Socially, I always like to ...
