Influences:
The most obvious influences are Metallica and Lamb of God, but most bands that I've heard or listened to have influenced me in some way.
Without Opeth, I would not have discovered death growls. Without Dream Theater, I would not have discovered any of my heroes of technical acumen; without Children of Bodom or Nevermore, I would have no idea of how to use technique in a heavy setting.
My influences are not all on the extreme side of the map. The Tragically Hip, Rush, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam are forever engraved on my brain, and in my soul, and I know that their influence does creep through on occasion. Porcupine Tree also provides influence and inspiration through their ability to turn catchy adult-contemporary (pop) into something dark and forbidding.
Last, but not least, a shout out to my favourite female singer: Angela (Gossow/Amott?) of Arch Enemy. It doesn't matter how big, bad, or tough you think you are (or sound); she will always sound meaner, and nastier, by far, although her stage movements are confusing at best : P.
Sounds Like:
A base of hard rhythm and melody (2 cups each)
stir in a healthy dose - is there such a thing? - of "Swedish" melodic death (3/4 cup), such as In Flames or Soilwork; and half a cup each of metalcore and thrash - Lamb of God and Metallica work best.
add 1/4 cup each Seattle grunge - preferably of the Soundgarden or Pearl Jam varieties - and classic rock - Rush works best, but Led Zeppelin can be substituted,
bring this mixture to a boil, then add two heaping tablespoons Opeth, 1/4 teaspoon "Norwegian" symphonic black - Dimmu Borgir being the most readily available variety - and a pinch of nu-metal: be sure to check the expiry date; use only fresh nu.
of course, you could just check out the samples at the top-right and judge for yourself.
