I am going through a change in life. Why? Because I just turned 40, am between jobs and relationships, and don't have the first clue what to do with my life: can you say, Mid-life Crisis? Don't you wish you were me?
Please bear with me through this upgrade. Or downgrade. Or whatever it is even if it means a total reboot of the system.
I'm a bibliovore and a painter, a former world-traveling English teacher turned stay at home mom to two delightful savages. I do one hell of an Ethel Merman impression, love studying languages and my dream job would be to work as an editor on a dictionary.
Having once been described as an "unholy alliance of Rita Hayworth, Madeleine Kahn and Julia Louis-Dreyfus," I'm often told that I'm "wicked funny" (Yes, I'm from New England), but there is the distinct possibility that I am not as funny as I think I am. That's just tragic, isn't it?
I love language. I enjoy playing with words and even, yes, reading dictionaries, thesauruses and style manuals.
Last fall, when I was motivating myself to write again, I recalled some advice from a very wise English teacher who told me that one of the keys to learning new vocabulary was to make the words relevant.
I thought that would be an excellent daily writing exercise for myself, so I started a daily blog on my MySpace blog with a word of the day. After the traditional definition, synonyms and usage blurbs, I added a section called "Relevance to My life," in which I'd use the word in a description of some aspect of my life.
Occasionally I'd add "What it is NOT" entries and video clips, some of which were directly relevant, and others which resulted from my stream-of-consciousness train of thought.
I hope that you enjoy them here in my MySpace blog or on Blogspot!

The Singing Revolution
This is one of the most amazing stories you may ever hear. If this movie plays anywhere near you, go see it. Drive two hours out of your way if you have to, but see it. I cried like a baby when I saw it. I lived in Estonia for a year not long after these events, and remember people talking about the Singing Revolution. Once you've been to one of the National Song and Dance Festivals in Tallinn, you'll never be the same again.
