It was almost three years ago that I began self-producing and recording songs in my freshman dorm room. All I had back then was a whack Dell laptop and a ten-dollar microphone from Radio Shack.
Since then I've come a long way. A really long way, if you compare those primitive attempts at finding my sound to today's sharper semi-pro DIY demos. Still keeping things in perspective, all I've really done on the exterior is buy a more expensive computer (it's all about the Mac) and a decent studio mic. The most significant changes have come from within.
A couple months ago I started getting attention from some major label producers and now I'm on the way to writing hits for my favorite artists. In the meantime, I'm playing shows across Los Angeles with my band JP and the Ambassadors, finishing up my last year at UCLA (Class of '09) and working part-time. I also work extensively on the UCLA JazzReggae Festival as a director and promoter. It's a tough balance to maintain all this and continue writing and growing as an artist, but to me this is like breathing. You can only hold your breath for so long...
