LaTasha Danielle Smith
The same open and engaging personality you see in performance is the same sistah dee you meet in person. Her stage name keeps her rooted in reality, as it comes from her middle name Danielle, and thats just the way she likes it.
Born LaTasha D. Mayes in 1977, sistah dee is a Baltimore, Maryland native with a genuine, Southern style of hospitality. She credits much to her parents Wilbert and Wilhelmenia McClamb who raised her in a Christian home. Although the teenaged sistah dee made a harsh departure from the values she was taught and followed her friends in hanging out, doing drugs, and participating in a cult, she eventually returned to her roots. One night in October of 1998, on the side of her bed, she fell to her knees with the intention of crying out Lord, Help Me! What actually came out her mouth was, Lord, Use Me! Once realizing what she said, she agreed to that cry, asking God to help her. That night, the prodigal daughter had come home, surrendering to the Lord Jesus Christ.
JESUS STILL SAVES!
Since the age of 19, sistah dee has become an incredible focused and directed individual as a result of committing her life to Christ Jesus. She has been a community activist, inspirational speaker, substitute teacher and successfully founded and organizes Sound The Alarm International, Inc., and now a blessed mother of 2; Gabrielle and Victoria. Sound The Alarm INTL, Inc. is an evangelistic, promotional ministry group whose vision is to Find The Problem and Make Solutions. This ministry includes a variety of companies to carry out this vision; Sound The Alarm Entertainment, Sound The Alarm Ministries, Sound The Alarm Records and Royalty Products. One of the more nationally known ministries is Sound The Alarm - THE COOKOUT & Concert, which is an annual community cookout held in Baltimore City. This outreach has drawn artists and visitors from all over the United States, as well as the Bahamas. sistah dee continues to assist churches and youth groups with events for different communities within Baltimore City and Counties.
sistah dee started writing poetry and spoken word pieces when she was in the 8th grade and in 1994, ventured into rapping by backing up her poetic flow with musical tracks. Soon after rededicating her life to Christ in 1998, the subject matter of sistah dees rhymes changed to reflect her new passion and direction in life. She describes her style as sweet ruggedness: rugged as a result of how lifes circumstances shaped her personality in the past yet sweet because of her femininity and the difference Jesus has made in her life. You will often find messages of hope and encouragement geared toward women in her lyrics. Another theme sistah dee likes to write about are male-female relationships that has God at its center.
Since taking her art seriously, sistah dee has been a featured recording artist on several compilations including her former record label RockSoul Entertainment's Compilation CD Rock Of Ages-Vol.1 and Urban Compositions, Bang Theory's The Underground Council II- Limited Edition, Bang Theory Presents Shorty Redd, Pinnacle Rhythms with Sean B., and The Yuinon's H.E.R Project and Genocide Compilation. sistah dee has both performed and spoke at a variety of churches, conferences, juvenile detention centers, and outdoor events throughout the East Coast over the last 8 years including Youth for Christs Impact Conference, Virtuous Sistazz Explosion, Rap Fest, Flavor Fest, Impact 2004, Holy Hip Hop Awards and Oasis in the Park Summer Jam III in Long Island, New York, sponsored by Black Entertainment Television.
sistah dee makes it known that she is nothing apart from Christ. Her desire is to stay humble before the Lord and allow Him to use her mightily as an example of His glory. For this reason, she requests that her name is always written in lowercase. One of sistah dees favorite scriptures is 2 Corinthians 5:17- Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. So if you see her rocking one of her butterflies, you will know why!
