derives from P.T.L. (Pimpin too Long, Pushin Tha Line, etc.), P dot T dot L dot, hence Tha Dot. P.T.L. is actually a movement formed in the 1990's by Cho and Scan's older brother, Web. "We were some playas for real and Part Time Lover by H-Town was a hit at the time so we ran with it," says Cho. Being from different hoods & understanding the value of street education they gave oppurtunities to the younger kids. "We gave them another outlet than the one's we were led to," says Cho. "I was young like them but I was taught by older cats & they preached if they had a 2nd chance they'll make better choices." It served well because at the time and still today youngsters are teaching themselves. But being heavy in the streets they got caught up in the money game and numbers grew. So much that the law enforcement labeled them a gang and were targeted by the sheriff's in'95 & '96. "They hit us hard, Detective (Doo-Doo) Brown (hoe!) stated he was going to be the reason for every member being in jail or the pen.
After recovering from that blow they decided to get back to what was the plan initially. Since Cho been rappin since plaid bomber jackets with the fur hoodies & Scan just seemed to be born with musical gifts they headed the forefront. They moved to Compton from L.A. and Scan reunited with younger brother J Real. It just start moving because they later hooked up with Chase(Brazil & Wilmington artist) who introduced them to Spitfya(Maloof/Iterscope recording artist) whom gave them some original beats. They honed their skills through constant repetition. "We were really hustlin & rappin at the same time," says Scan. Literally posted with pen, pad, work, and a burner they created a buzz throughout Compton. "We felt if we could get the attention of Compton it would be smooth sailin cause we had the rep in L.A.," says Scan. At the time 50 did his mixtape series & many followed in his footsteps. They followed suit but quickly separated themselves by adding lyrical prowless with depth & content. Scan & Cho made the hit mixtape, "Tha Block Takeover," and probably were the first to add original beats with hit instrumentals. J.R. did only one song on the CD, which the two did not understand at the time. What they didn't understand was that J.R. was listening & learning becoming his own, and now none can doubt his abilities.
The CD caught the attention of an A&R at Sony. The deal seemed eminent, but was promised llater after Sony finished creating the new Sony Music Co. we know now. In the new shake up the A&R was implicated and released. "The dude was... let's just say doin some shady sh** down there. We were banking on the deal so much that we stopped shopping & listening to other oppurtunities. It killed us, we put so much into it that money was gone & spent & we had to put food on the table. So it was back to grinding for the group. They individually appeared on numerous tracks with other west artists but no group effort until now. "We're ready now and willin to do this indie if we have to," says Cho. Along with J Real, now there is no stopping the three.
Scan has an album out which is probably the best album from the west since Game's Documentary. Pick it up from Tower Records or go to his site for further details on getting it shipped to you via on-line. '06 is definitely Tha Dot's year, and there is no way of stopping the movement!!!!!
