About Me

TERESA DISKENBIOGRAPHYTeresa Disken is a new singer-songwriter with Cherokee blood and an Irish soul.Brought up by her Irish American grandparents and father in Cabinteely, a small town on the outskirts of Dublin, Teresa was introduced to a broad musical mix, from opera to Irish traditional to Abba and Elvis, and was encouraged from a young age to sing for family and friends. She began writing lyrics aged 10, with: ‘Vicky Vacuum is my name, I clean up bits and bobs. My friend is Sid the fryer, he was made by Russell Hobbs.’‘Pretty embarrassing, but everyone has to start somewhere! I was curious about people’s responses. Now it’s more about self-expression.’On graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, she went to Naxos, Greece, where she taught English as a foreign language and encountered mainstream and traditional Greek and Arabic music. She soon fell in love with the pentatonic sounds and beats, drama and imagery of Greek songs.Teresa started off performing her songs in duos before forming The Loops, a lead and bass guitar four-member rock band which recorded electric versions of Fumble, One of the Few, Goodbye Waltz and Hard to Work, amongst other songs. Playing upstairs at the Garage in June 2006, the band received a standing ovation at the sound check, thrashing out a version of Hard to Work.Check Gigs and News for details of upcoming live dates. www.teresadisken.com [email protected] and www.myspace.com/diskentheband, her band's site.
