Although no one knows for certain, Killeen probably was named for Frank P. Killeen, a civil engineer for Santa Fe Railroad. Killeen was created as a stop on the railroad when tracks where laid across Bell county in 1882. Boasting a population in excess of 100,000, Killeen is now the largest city in Bell County and is the home of Central Texas College and Tarleton State University-Central Texas Campus. The City abuts Fort Hood, the largest U S. military post, to the north and west and the city of Harker Heights to the east. A regional airport equipped with 10,000 ft. runways was completed in August 2004 as a joint venture with Fort Hood.
