Harlem Klapsaddle

About Me

Harlem Klapsaddle formed in Elgin Illinois in the mid 1990's. They experienced nominal success in the Chicago bar scene. Harlem Klapsaddle is the only band to record and release all of their major albums subsequent to their breakup. Their first recording was "The Humbling" a demo recorded by Chuck Keysor. Following Tom Lager's sudden and unexpected move to Portland, OR the band recorded their debut studio length album Loud Like Elvis. The cd contains recorded versions of many of their live staples as well as more recent tunes. LLE was released in 1996. Realizing that they had more stories to tell HK went back into the studio to record their second full length cd "Harlem Klapsaddle...Goes to the Circus" This cd included actual live recordings from some of their finest shows as well as more of the bands originals. This recording is known for the first inclusion of songs written by Mike Hayashida.Despite not playing live for 4 years Harlem Klapsaddle decided it wasn't finished yet and decided to record Viagra Falls in 1998. Viagra included more live tracks, brand new songs and some old chestnuts from the Lowery/Vaulato songbook. It even included a few songs from the Big Dog era(Lowery, Hayashida and Vaulato's previous band with the Loveless brothers and Steve Fure).Remarkably in 1999 HK returned for one more release "Harlem Klapsaddle IV... Better than we thought it would be." This album contains 1/2 studio originals and 1/2 live tracks.A few new projects are in the works including a Greatest Hits set and a remastered Live cd. The three remaining members of HK are currently talking about the possibility of recording new material. The boys continue to make music separately. Jeff Lowery has gone on to record a solo album Quilt of Life and to record an album with Oddonesinn. Tim Vaulato continues his work with Wishbone Jones and Michael Hayashida has been active with the bluegrass influenced Swampdonkeys. Tom Lager is still missing but rumored to be living in Nebraska. Keep your ears out for more HK coming to this site soon including videos and new music.* harlem klapsaddle does not derive its name from any racial slur, nor is it a disease that one gets from sleeping with horses. The band feels that the origin of the name should remain a mystery, at least until that thing with the Catholic church passes.
