Influences: The Era
"Back in the hey day of fun core kids skanked it up and the only screaming was from the crowd" -Mike Johnson (Making It Right)
Bison Bison was born out of a local music scene that really does not exist anymore. In their infacy they shared the stage with such local legends as Tempus and bands like the Obscurities.
As they matured they began to book local shows and an unprecedented era of local music solidarity began. Sweaty nights at places like the Trance Buddha, The Ashland Fish And Game, The Grafton Polish Hall and the Northbridge Legion shaped many of our childhoods.
This was a time before Myspace, before mosh hats, when justanotherscene.com could plan your weekend, a time when a band singing about cookies and yelling about yard gnomes could share the stage with yet another band mangling Understanding In A Car Crash
As Justin Trask put it "these were the days when you didn't have to worry about being kicked in the face for wearing a baseball hat and shorts"
Sharing the stage with such local bands as Making It Right, Montys Fan Club, Eight Bit Tradgedy, All Said And Done, Duckhunt, The Lead Hour, Fighting Words, Francine, 34 Spoons, Sgt. Peterson And The Chicago Police, Can't Face The Falling, No Trigger, The Cheat, Pickle Spill and The Senators among others, some of those names have become legendary others feel like secret passwords to a secret society and are long since forgotten. Often 5 or more of these bands would be on one bill at the legendary Mollusk Fest.
As the halcyon days of local music surged on the Mollusk Fest Culture harbored by Bison Bison gave rise to numerous up and coming local acts following in their footsteps, bands like Sweatpantsdotcom, Junta and The Wasted Afterhought cut their teeth at Mollusk Fest and became local favorites.
Out of town acts such as Clearmotive and MC Goldie Wilson would find their was to Central Mass on occaison and share the stage with Bison Bison.
Mollusk Fest became a highlighted date on many local calenders, Bison Bison is an result of their upbrining and their local and hopefully an inlfuence on it's homeland as well.
We hope there is hope for local music once again, but it may have been a special time that cannot be replicated. As Jerry Lucey formerly of the band Fighting Words and currently of the band Golden Spurs said "Music in the good ol days was just plain fun, everyone got a long, now it's a huge competetion...which is lame"
loud, obnoxious, hot, sweaty, fun, silly, great, gross, wonderful, are all words that come to mind but one word that will never be used to describe that era is lame.
