FAMILY VILAKATI APPEAL

About Me

I edited my profile with Thomas' Myspace Editor V4.4
Filmed in Swaziland in 2005, the documentary short 'Family Vilakati' has become a MySpace success story. Thousands of you have been touched by this film. So in response to all your requests, we have teamed with Hope HIV and the Salvation Army to help orphans living in situations similar to the Vilakati family featured in this documentary.
We need to raise £10,000 ($20,000) so that we can help more child-headed households. If you haven't already, please give 10 minutes of your time to watch this film.

THE PROJECT
In 2003, the Salvation Army set up kids camps to give orphaned children psycho-social and practical support. This includes:
• Regular home visits to orphans to assess their family situation and to provide basic support and counselling
• The establishment of Child Protection Committees in villages
• Parenting-skills training for adolescent heads of households
• Training and support for orphan guardians
• Health clubs for children in 30 schools
• School fees for orphans who cannot afford to pay
• Annual residential adventure camps
• Educational support for those falling behind in school
• Vocational support for older orphans
Yet, despite these efforts, thousands of children like the Vilakati family remain unreached and unsupported. Our goal is to raise £10,000 to extend this project to more regions in Swaziland. If you have been touched by this story please give generously; your donation will substantially help to alleviate the suffering of many children.
THE VILAKATI FAMILY TODAY
After the making of this film the Vilakati family were sponsored by a family from the U.K. (£500 a year provides them with food, clothes and an education.)
However, the Vilakatis are but 4 of the 65,000 children in Swaziland who have been left orphaned by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Please help us to help them!

FILM SYNOPSIS
'Family Vilakati' is a 10-minute, fly-on-the-wall documentary depicting a day in the life of a family of four orphans who live alone and support themselves in the Northern Swaziland Mountains. The youngest, four-year-old Macabo, was not yet old enough to attend school and spent the days roaming the fields. His elder siblings attend the local primary school as the government now pays their fees. Peter, the 15-year-old head of the family, is now in grade two of primary school and herds cattle in the mornings to provide clothes and maize for his family. It's a humbling story about a closeknit family that manages to remain content and strong despite their struggles. With 50 percent of the adult population in Swaziland already infected with HIV/AIDS, this is the reality for a rapidly growing population of parentless children.
