The entertainment industry is not known for being “nice at heart” or helping those who don’t first help themselves. Drenna, the aspiring on-air personality, knows that and firmly believes her dedication is beginning to pay off in the broadcasting field.Drenna started on the road to broadcasting as a junior at Jackson State University, where she later earned her Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications. She was an on-air personality for the school’s jazz station, WJSU, which still holds the title as the only jazz station in the state of Mississippi. The position quickly solidified her career decisions were right on track with her personality. Her experience at WJSU allowed her to receive an internship at New York’s now defunct, Jammin’ 105 and come face to face with her possible future. Under the direction of legendary jocks such as Freddie Colon, Diana King, and Johnny Allen, Drenna learned valuable information to last a lifetime.After graduation, Drenna returned to New York and did a short stint at The College Board and also worked with music manager David Fischoff.In 2003, Drenna landed a position at SONYBMG Music Entertainment in their computer department. While working at SONYBMG, she was able to meet successful industry executives whose hard working ethics fueled the fire to push her ever harder to get back into the entertainment industry in some capacity. After leaving SONYBMG in early 2005, Drenna knew that her place in entertainment would be in radio. She says: “Radio has always been a place where I felt would fit my personality if I had the opportunity – since I was 13 years old, I’ve felt that way. I have never been afraid of hard work and firmly believe that you have to start from the bottom and work your way up to the top. Nobody is going to GIVE you anything.”So, in November 2005, Drenna stepped foot into Emmis New York (a division of Emmis Communications Corporation), home of Hot 97, KISS Fm, and CD 101.9, as their newest receptionist. In this role, she interacts with many different types of people while being around a radio station day in and day out. Her goal is to continue to learn as much about radio as possible and put what she learns to use as an on-air personality.She's well on her way and hopes that when she achieves her dream, she can help others find their way too....
