JOHANNA SAINT-PIERRE
THE HEYDAY
THE
HEYDAY
Start
me up!
At age 6, when little girls are still having tea parties
with their dolls, Johanna Saint-Pierre joins the Academy in piano,
musical theory, dance and song. She obtains a master of musicology at
the French university La Sorbonne, and studies at the CIM, a jazz
school in Paris.
After a first girl band, Cheri Bibi, and a jazz
album with the Break First Quartet, she becomes a background singer
and keyboard player for the band Laplace; a first album, a tour
ending at the Cigale, a famous stage in Paris, opening for Simple
Minds in France and then opening for the Rolling Stones at the
Olympia in 1995…
Electronic
Superstar
Johanna
is quickly interested in the all steps of the creative process.
Composing and arranging, she gets busy writing, then producing,
getting into the machines and the sound, which offers her creative
independence. She produces and composes original soundtracks, of
which recently "Mamadou Il Est Où" won the Youth prize at
the Short Film Festival in 2008 in France. She is also making music
for advertising, such as "The Transmanche Ferry" for the
English agency Astonwood, and for Lancaster perfumes for an event in
Berlin. Simultaneously with pop and jazz, Johanna bathes in club
culture and is friendly with prestigious DJs.
Her
first 12†vinyl release, “Electronic Superstarâ€, was remixed by
Marc Ricci who is a DJ at Hotel Coste and producer of the illustrious
compilations. Then she collaborates with Jephté Guillaume for the
vinyl release “L’Ame Eternelle". Her last EP "In Jaguar
Beige" was remixed by MKL.
Several titles are licensed
for compilations (yepparty.com, Private Lounge 4, Opium Garden 2,
Asian 2, The French Club Night, lbadan, Pill Grim), or by labels
throughout the world (Discograph, Universal, EMl, lbadan, Abricot
records, Moist music…).
Ultra Pop
In
2007, Johanna self-produced her album "Ultra Pop" which
includes elegant and refined songs, with pop melodies crossed with
electronic arrangements. It is a modern homage to her idols of
always: Serge Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin, Francoise Hardy, Michel
Polnareff… With its sweet and soft voice, the album is nominated as
“best electronic music album" at the French Music Awards in
2008 (Victoires de la Musique).
The Heyday
In
2009, Johanna kept the momentum and self-produced her second album
“The Heydayâ€, with English and French songs in an electro folk
style. Pianos are based in electronic sounds, the harp distils a wind
of elegance and the fine, clear and bright voice imposes itself like
a passionate breath. Johanna also renders her take of timeless songs
like "Love Me Tender , Henri Mancini’s "Moon River",
Fats Waller’s "Ain't Misbehaving" and "The
Godfather"’s theme by Nino Rota… With this new album,
Johanna signs a work at her image: mystic, natural and delicate. A
personal universe sublimated by a refined production, taking Johanna
to the firmament of essential singers. An
angel passes, listen to it…
