The Story Of A Hero.
Beloved television icon and entertainment pioneer, Ellen DeGeneres' distinctive comic voice has resonated with audiences from her first stand-up comedy appearances through her work today on television, in film and in the literary world.
DeGeneres has made a home for herself in the daytime arena with her hit syndicated talk show, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” The show now in fourth season has recently won six Daytime Emmys, including Outstanding Talk Show and Outstanding Talk Show Host, earning the show a total of twenty one Daytime Emmy Awards during its first three seasons. Additionally, DeGeneres won two People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Daytime Talk Show Host and Favorite Funny Female Star for the second year in a row. She also won the Producers Guild Award for the second consecutive year for Outstanding Variety Television Show. DeGeneres was also selected as one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people and was voted “Favorite TV Host” in a Time Magazine poll, up against such competition as, Oprah Winfrey, Regis Philbin, Kelly Ripa and Meredith Vieira. In addition, DeGeneres has been tapped to host the 79th Annual Academy Awards on February 25, 2007.
“The Ellen DeGeneres Show” was launched in September 2003 to great success and critical acclaim. In its freshman year, the show won four Daytime Emmys, including Outstanding Talk Show, after garnering a record twelve nominations.
DeGeneres partnered up with American Express in 2005 where she appeared in their ad campaign "My Life, My Card," including a national commercial and a print campaign. DeGeneres will continue to appear in the 2006 ad campaign and recently shot a national commercial which was perfectly suited for the animal loving DeGeneres, who got a chance to work with new co-workers including a tortoise, a giraffe and penguins as part of their new campaign “My Life Goal: to work with animals.”
Prior to the launch of her talk show, DeGeneres scored a rare coup in 2004 with simultaneous achievements on stage, film and in the literary world. She enjoyed unprecedented popular and critical response to her character, ‘Dory,’ the fish with an extremely short term memory, in the blockbuster Disney/Pixar animated feature film, “Finding Nemo.” Written and directed by Andrew Stanton, and co-starring Albert Brooks and Willem Dafoe among others, the Academy Award winner for Best Animated Film has made over $850 million dollars worldwide to date, making it one of the highest grossing computer-animated films in history, as well as one of the highest domestic grossing films of 2003. In addition, DeGeneres was nominated for a 2004 MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance for her work in the film.
DeGeneres crossed the country on a 35-city stand-up comedy tour in Spring 2003, entitled the “Here and Now” tour. The series of shows included a performance at the famed Beacon Theater in New York, which was taped for HBO. The resulting special aired on June 28th, 2003 and scored higher ratings than any HBO comedy special had in years. It was subsequently nominated for two Emmys including Outstanding Individual Performance In A Variety Or Music Program and Outstanding Variety, Music Or Comedy Special. HBO followed by releasing the special on DVD.
In October 2003, Simon & Schuster published DeGeneres’ second book, The Funny Thing Is…., comprised of the author's comedic short stories and essays. The book hit the New York Times' Bestseller list upon its release. In 2005, DeGeneres was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album for the audio version of the book.
A performer with a keen sense of comedy in the moment, DeGeneres garnered rave reviews for her performance hosting the 2001 Primetime Emmy Awards. Taking the reins of the high profile event with assuredness, she provided a perfect balance of wit with heartfelt emotion and gave the post-September 11th telecast’s audience a reason to laugh.
DeGeneres’ career began as an emcee at a local comedy club in her hometown of New Orleans, which led to national recognition in 1982 when her videotaped club performances won Showtime’s “Funniest Person In America.” When DeGeneres moved to Los Angeles she filmed her first HBO Special “Young Comedians Reunion,” then in 1986 “Women of the Night.” That same year, DeGeneres scored a first by becoming the first and only comedienne to be summoned by Johnny Carson to sit down with him after her performance. DeGeneres followed in 1989 by receiving a Cable Ace nomination for her “Command Performance: One Night Stand” special. She was also named “Best Female Stand-Up” at the 1991 American Comedy Awards.
DeGeneres began her acting career in television on Fox’s sitcom, “Open House.” She moved on to ABC’s “Laurie Hill,” prior to being offered “These Friends of Mine” by ABC. After the first season, the show was renamed “Ellen.” Running from 1994 to 1998, the show garnered record ratings with DeGeneres receiving Emmy nominations each season in the “Best Actress” category. In 1997 DeGeneres was the recipient of the coveted Peabody Award as well as earning an Emmy for writing the critically acclaimed “Puppy Episode” when her character came out as a gay woman to a record 46 million viewers. DeGeneres followed with the CBS sitcom, “The Ellen Show,” which ran from 2001 to 2002.
In the course of producing and starring in “Ellen,” DeGeneres received numerous accolades including The People’s Choice Award in 1995, two Golden Globe nominations and two Screen Actors Guild nominations. Other television credits include Executive Producing and starring with Sharon Stone in the Emmy nominated “If These Walls Could Talk II” for HBO as well as a guest appearance on the “Larry Sanders Show,” for which she received another Emmy nomination.
DeGeneres’ feature film credits includes “EDTV” for director Ron Howard, “The Love Letter” for Dreamworks, New Regency’s “Goodbye Lover,” “Coneheads” and “Mr. Wrong” in which she starred with Bill Pullman.
DeGeneres has also served as host for several industry events including the 57th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards and the 38th and 39th Annual Grammy Awards, for which she earned an Emmy nomination, the 46th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, receiving an American Comedy Award, the VH1 Honors, which garnered her a Cable Ace Award, VH-1 “Diva’s Las Vegas” and The Saturday Night Live Christmas Special.”
In 1995, her first book My Point…And I Do Have One debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, and in 1997 she released her comedy CD, “Taste This.” In July 2000, DeGeneres returned to stand-up embarking on a three-month tour of major theatres across the country that culminated in her critically acclaimed and Emmy nominated special for HBO, “The Beginning.”
Since she was first nationally recognized in 1982 as a comedian in New Orleans, Ellen’s many contributions to the entertainment industry have earned her numerous accolades including a Golden Apple Award as Female Discovery of the Year from the Hollywood Women’s Press Club, a Lucy Award honoring women in Television and Film, as well as an Amnesty International Award.
Ellen and Portia.
-Ellen DeGeneres is an actress and TV talk show host. She's won several daytime Emmy awards, hosted the Grammy's in 2001 and the Oscars in 2007.
-Portia de Rossi is an actress who was born under the name Amanda Lee Rogers in Melbourne, Australia in 1973. She changed her name to Portia when she was 15 after a character in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. She starred in Ally McBeal and Arrested Development. Portia de Rossi is 15 years younger than Ellen DeGeneres.
Portia de Rossi said she met Ellen DeGeneres in about 2000 and although there was chemistry, she didn't pursue it. Portia said in an interview in The Advocate "I ran into Ellen at a photo shoot [in 2004] and she took my breath away. That had never happened to me in my life, where I saw somebody and [experienced] all of those things you hear about in songs and read about in poetry. My knees were weak."
When you're as famous as Ellen DeGeneres, it's hard to keep things private. Ellen and Portia began their relationship in December 2004, after seeing each other again at VH1's Big in '04 awards show.Ellen DeGeneres said in People magazine about marriage, "If it were legal, we would be married, but it's not legal. I hate politics, but I think everyone should be treated equally. If I die tomorrow, everything's taken away."
Portia said in the Advocate when asked about marriage, "Well, I have to be asked, I guess. But I love the idea of marriage. I think it's beautiful. I'm such a romantic, and I always have been."
Will Ellen & Portia have children? "Never say never," Ellen said in People. "When I'm around babies, I just melt."
-Ellen said in People, "We were just supposed to be together. It was a tough decision. I was physically getting sick because I was trying so hard not to say anything."
-Portia gushed about Ellen in the Advocate, "Just being a couple - being able to walk down a red carpet holding her hand, that's exciting for me. I respect her so much. She was so courageous and so loud in '97, and now she is doing something that is more subliminal. She's changing the world, she really is, and it's exciting to be a part of that.
-In the Advocate Ellen said, "I could say the same thing I've said in every relationship: I'm happy. But there's happiness and there's love, and then there's completion."
Ellen DeGeneres says she's been happy in relationships before – but not the kind of happy that she feels with Portia de Rossi.
DeGeneres, who is set to host the Academy Awards on Feb. 25, tells The Advocate in its new issue that she's reached a different level of contentment with her actress girlfriend of two years.
"I could say the same thing I've said in every relationship: 'I'm happy.' But there's happiness and there's love, and then there's completion," the Emmy-winning talk-show host says. "It doesn't take away from any of the relationships that I've had, 'cause I've had amazing relationships. ... But I feel like I found my perfect fit."
DeGeneres and de Rossi began dating in late 2004.
One key to their happiness, says DeGeneres, is that they learn things from each other. "She's taught me lessons about myself, and I feel like I've taught her," says DeGeneres. "We've both changed and grown, and we just feel like, 'Oh, OK, this is completion.' "
In September 2005, de Rossi told The Advocate that her relationship with DeGeneres was "very loving, peaceful," adding, "I really feel not alone for the first time in my life."
In the new interview, DeGeneres also reveals how jazzed she is to be hosting the Academy Awards. "There's a nervousness, but there's also an excitement," she says. "You want to do your best, naturally, but it's also just letting it happen once you're out there."
The hosting gig means she won't get to walk the red carpet with de Rossi. But actually, that's okay, says DeGeneres: "When we're together and she's in her heels, I always feel like Tom Cruise next to Nicole Kidman."
Why I Admire Ellen.
Ellen is my hero. Ya dig? (:Ellen has pretty much saved my life. She has changed my entire life. Just when I felt like giving up, Ellen saved me. She showed me that it's okay to be different. It's okay to be who you want to be. She showed me that life can be pretty easy if you think positive and keep your head high. She taught me to never give up and always stay strong no matter who is trying to push you down.
Ellen Degeneres is my hero for severel reason. She has a kind heart, she is hilarious, and she has the guts to speak her mind and stand up for what she believes in. I get the "ew" remark all the time after stating that Ellen is my hero, and I HATE it. It's so so so so so so stupid. You don't like Ellen because she is gay? Well, I don't like you because you are a jerk ! Ellen is a good person, and I don't care who the heck she chooses to love, as long as she is happy. Ellen has been through so much in her life, and she manages to stay happy and fun. Ellen gets critized ever single day for being gay. Most people won't look past that. If you look past that fact that she is gay, you will see that she is one of the worlds greatest people. She is so kind to everyone. She speaks her mind but she does it without critizing people. Ellen focuses on the positive things in life, which is part of the reason she is such a bright and funny person. I get judged and made fun of all the time for supporting Ellen. And personally I think it is stupid. You support who you want, and I will support who I want. I don't hold back when I say "ELLEN IS MY HERO!" You can say whatever you want, but I won't ever change my mind about it. I've gotten so many people coming to me and saying "Oh. Well, being gay is a sin!" Well hunny, i'm pretty sure i've read the bible and i'm pretty sure I already knew that! But does it really look like I care? No. Obviously not. Because if i'm not mistaken..God says its not right to hate people..! Well, why are you hating her for being gay? It is who she chooses to be, so back off. You shouldn't judge someone by who they choose to love. It's just not right.
