About Me
“……we have one of the nicest men in dance music. Carlo Gambino should need no introduction to the clubbers of Leeds. He has been DJing longer than we care to remember and has graced the decks at many of Leeds greatest nights with his water tight mixing and supremely slick beats. Carlo has been a true stalwart of the Leeds clubbing circuit and you will not meet a nicer guy.â€
Words: Joe Morris (Polaroid)
Having spent time on the dance floor as a regular clubber, just dancing to the records wasn’t enough, at 17 Carlo bought his own turntables and that’s when the love of all things ‘House’ began. It became very clear from an early age that music would play a major role in Carlo's life; for over 20 years his father has worked in the music industry, touring with successful artists such as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Prince so it came to no surprise that he wanted to follow a similar path.
In 1995 Carlo moved to Newcastle to study, this is where he gained his first residency at ‘Nice’ and also hosted a weekly radio show on ‘Nice FM’. After a year in the North East Carlo decided to move to Leeds to continue with his degree in Multimedia Technology and pursue his career DJing.
DJing has taken Carlo all over the UK and Europe; he has played in Italy, Ireland and Ibiza, and has had regular sets in Leeds, Birmingham, Sheffield and Manchester. Polaroid, Paradise Factory, Peruvia, Soapbox, Tribal Sessions and Sunday Roast are a small selection of clubs played. He has also held residencies for Dusted (Middlesbrough), Nice (Newcastle) and Leeds based Hunky Dory and The Warehouse.
In 1995 Carlo promoted his own night in Birmingham called ‘Play Your Cards Right’, a few years later in 2001 ‘Hunky Dory’ followed in Leeds and was a great success; he aimed to provide an inexpensive night with quality music and a house party feel. After 6 months Carlo decided to change direction and host regular one-off themed events, this resulted in the legendary boat parties on the ‘Prince Bishop’ in Durham.
For 9 years Carlo has visited the beautiful island of Ibiza both as a worker and a tourist. In 2007 whilst working for Carl Cox at Space, Carlo hosted a weekly workers’ DC10 After Party at Viva. Over the years going to Ibiza Carlo has had sets at various spots including; Opium, Hush, QPQ, Coastline, Kanya and legendary Back II Basics Pre-Party.
Having entered the production side over 4 years ago, Carlo has had several releases. ‘Together’, a deep house number released on white label in 2006 was hammered by the likes of Casa Musica DJ’s, Lil Mark and Inland Knights. ‘Be There’ followed in 2007 on NYC Label ‘Blunted Funk’, this smooth, soulful, jacking house rocker would be right at home in a Mazi or Jay Tripwire set. ‘Trust’ and ‘Talkin’ Dirty’ was then released as a 2 track EP released on the Italian label, Tokyo Red in 2007. Now into 2009 Carlo has a whole host of tracks in the pipeline, the first one being, The Nox - ‘Airplay’ (Carlo Gambino remix) being released in February through Monu Digital.
In 2007 Carlo came runner up in the IDJ Magazine ‘Raw Talent’ competition. Having entered the competition again in December 2008, Carlo won with his ‘Talk is Cheap’ mix. The judges gave rave reviews of the mix.
"This is very deep and bubbling. It progressed nicely, clearly alot of thought has gone into this - it will be great to hear a full two hour mix from him." (Deepgroove)
"I love anything that starts off creatively, and this works a treat. As far as the stripped back druggy mixes go, this is a pretty perfect trip." (Jody Wisternoff)
Carlo describes his style as totally across the board. He creates his own style and sound playing anything from deep house to tech house to wonky techno and anything in-between. If it’s got a beat and a base line to get the party started, he’s guaranteed to play it. Carlo’s influences come from the likes of: Guillaume & The Cotou Dumonts, Ricardo Villolobos, Inland Knights, Derrick Carter, Gaiser, Marc Romboy, Mountain People, Peace Division, Loco dice, Tanzmann, Reboot, Jimpster, Milton Jackson, Jonny D, Matthew Dear, Berkson & What, Frederico Molinari, Anthony Collins, Luciano and Sebo K to name but a few.
Carlo is now into his 14th year DJing/producing and promoting and is on course for even more success. 2009 is looking to be a good year so far……watch this space.
