Songwriter and closet folky...
Hi folks, my name is Steve Gates. Not the insurance salesman from Wyoming, nor the folk master from somewhere else in the states. I am the Steve Gates from small town Nova Scotia who writes folk tunes. After the long process of recording my band's new album, Caledonia "We Are America", I stole some time away last fall to record a solo disk with some friends that I hope to release next November (2009) and do some touring.
This record draws its inspiration two places. Firstly, from the Daniel Lanois produced Emmy Lou Harris record, “Wrecking Ballâ€, and secondly, from my work with “at risk†folk in the Yukon and at home in Halifax. "A Bee In Her Mouth" is a collection of song stories that I've been working on for a long time and I hope you dig them.
I've been lucky enough to preform this material with opening sets for local artists such as Jenn Grant, Rose Cousins, The Divorcees, Garret Mason, Duane Andrews and countless times for Caledonia on our national and regional tours. Once we launch the new Caledonia record this summer, I hope to tour this record as well.
Until then, I hope you enjoy these mp3s!
-Steve

"Lost Balloons is a sparsely tinted emotive feast...there is an inherent darkness, possibly quelled from hours of Leonard Cohen or Wilco consumption...Sometimes you reach resolve by not resolving anything." -Shain Shapiro, Leeds Revue, UK
