DJ Biography
Intro
Dedicated, full of heart, versatile, passionate, respectful, intelligent and influential. Those are just a few words to describe the type of person that Joey Rivaldo is and has become today. Over time, Joey has become one of the most sought after DJ's and one of the best at programming his Radio Mixshows. He is as versatile as they come. Joey has done various Club gigs, Radio Mixshows, Underground parties and is also a Freelance Music Writer as well as a Chart Reporter. He has played a wide variety of music ranging from all sorts of House, Trance, Breakbeat, Hip-Hop and everything else in between. For a DJ coming from a 3rd Tier City like Rochester, Joey Rivaldo's success has been measured by taking baby steps to making huge leaps and bounds in the music industry.
Club DJ
Joey's Club DJ career began back in 1994. He became a quick learner and in 1996 earned his first two club gigs. From that point on, Joey has been DJ'ing at various clubs while being able to cater to both straight and gay clubs alike. A trait that is easier said then done. Rising up to the challenge, in 1998 he spun at the Greater Rochester Gay Love Parade to show off his versatility. Throughout 1999, Joey began growing as a DJ while starting to do parties and afterhour spots at some of the hottest and still most talked about clubs in Rochester. Joey explains why he will always stay versatile and never stick with just one style of music or genre. "Times and music are always changing. I never felt the need to stay underground or go commercial. Whether a song is underground or commercial greatly depends on the listener's point of view. I've always looked at the fact that quality music is quality music. No matter what the style is, if it's good, I'm going to play it".
But the year 2000 proved to be the breakthrough year that he has been waiting for. Joey became a resident DJ at Club Vibes. Every weekend was a party as he educated the crowd and always tried to raise the standard of the level of music being played. While being a resident DJ at Club Vibes, Joey threw successful CD release parties and various retail promotions with Astralwerks Records for Artists such as Basement Jaxx and Fatboy Slim. After the label and retail stores saw an increase in sales, the public couldn't help but take notice with his influence. Joey has DJ’d at Official Winter Music Conference and Billboard Dance Music Summit Parties as well as other parties with some of the best DJ’s including Bad Boy Bill, Richard Vission, DJ Rap, DJ Dan, Static Revenger and more in Miami, New York City and a few other cities in between. When asked about his thoughts about such opportunities Joey had this to say: "I always wanted to see if I can play with the big boys in the music industry. To see if I really have what it takes. Playing in Miami during the Conference or in New York gives me that chance to play among the best, in front of the best and I'm always grateful for the opportunity" Joey’s energetic sets of House and Trance will continue to put the crowds into a frenzy as he expands his Club Gigs in the future.
Mixshow DJ
In 2000 he was then asked to do Radio Mixshows on WRUR 88.5FM in Rochester. It was at this point where the baby steps were starting to become bigger and bigger. His Mixshows took off with immediate success. After getting his Mixshows off the ground he became a DMA Magazine Chart Reporter for Radio Mixshows, Hi NRG and Clubs. Since then, Joey has been mentioned on countless websites and promotion letters for his support of breaking new singles and supporting the dance community. Harry Towers, a long time Industry friend was so confident in Joey's growing abilities and future he asked him to be a Radio Mixshow Panelist at the 2001 Winter Music Conference alongside some of the biggest and most influential Mixshow jocks in the country. Two months later, Joey was featured in the 2001 May issue of the DMA Magazine for his Mixshow contributions. A year later, Joey came back to the Winter Music Conference in 2002 to make his 2nd consecutive appearance as a Mixshow Panelist. Not satisfied enough with doing Mixshows in his hometown. Joey looked to breakout on a national level to see how far he could go in exposing his style of music to the masses. Since mid-2002, he has guest DJ'd on countless Mixshows across the country from the East Coast to the West Coast. Still currently doing Mixshows for KNHC C89.5FM in Seattle, Washington and a Syndicated Mixshow on Interference Mix based in California, Joey has taken his Mixshow talent to a whole new level. Harry Towers of Deet Promotions who is in charge for charting the Mixshow records from playlists all over the country had this to say about Joey. "Joey Rivaldo's talent as a disc jockey is matched only by his passion for the music he plays. He's constantly striving to expose his mix show on a national level for the pure enthusiasm of breaking records! In today's narcissistic music business, Joey is like a breath of fresh air".
To prove Harry's point, 2003 turned out to be Joey's biggest year yet as a Mixshow DJ. In the Spring of 2003, Joey was asked to start doing mixes for Sirius Satellite Radio on The Rave/Remix Stream 62 and then later on The Vortex Stream 64. It was on The Vortex station that Joey's biggest accomplishment to date came when he was asked to be part of Trance Journey 4 and Trance Journey 5 special Mixshow line-up that featured the Top Trance DJ's from all over the world like Above & Beyond, George Acosta, Airbase, Airwave, Armin Van Buuren, Blank & Jones, Gareth Emery, Les Hemstock, Lange, Talla 2XLC and so many more. "To be a part of the Trance Journey Mixshows with some of the best DJ's, Producers and Remixers around the world is quite an honor. I couldn't believe I was included in such a great line-up with all the All-Stars. As a DJ coming from a city like Rochester it was very humbling to me in a way because it made me realize just how far I have come and also made me realize how much further I could take it. It has given me the confidence that just about anything is possible". Joey is still a Resident Mixshow DJ on Sirius Satellite Radio and has spun on several of there stations like The Vortex, The Rave, Remix, Area, The Beat, Chill and a Guest DJ on OutQ. In October he was asked to do a LIVE guest Mixshow appearance on CMP Radio UK for Chris Brophy's Infect'ive Mixshow. After doing another guest appearance on CMP Radio UK in December he was officially added to the Mixshow roster permanently in January 2004. Now his Mixshows have gone from a national level to an international level. In 2005, the Infect’ive Mixshow went International in a big way by broadcasting in several continents and countries all around the Globe like several stations in the United States, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Sierra Leone in North Africa, Indonesia and China. Later in 2005 Joey Rivaldo achieved another great milestone when he won the International Web Radio Awards for Best House DJ, beating out one of his idol DJ's, Bad Boy Bill. When interviewed Joey had this to say, "Although I realized to many that this isn't the IDMA Awards this is a big step for me in the right direction. To be awarded Best House DJ on an International level when there are so many great DJ's out there in the world is truly an honor and is something I am very proud of".
Freelance Music Writer/Chart Reporter
In 2000 as Joey started doing his Mixshows he became a Chart Reporter. He quickly had a very strong impact on the Dance Charts and at one point was the Number 2 most influential Mixshow Jock in America according to the Deet Promotions Chart research. In early 2002 Joey had a small break from Mixshows as he was starting a new station. In between he looked for something to help fill the void and make sure he wasn’t forgotten about. To help pass the time he started reviewing Dance Singles on his own. He quickly earned the praise from many and continued it every month and submitted his reviews to various outlets like DMA Magazine, US Dance Radio and Dance Music.About.com. In 2003 he teamed up with two other DJ’s and Writers to start up a new magazine called US Dance Magazine. Continuing his Music Reviews Joey also interviewed some of the Industries best like ATB, Richard Vission, DJ Icey, Georgie Porgie, Becky Baeling and more as well as contributed to other articles, charts and formats. But as with many other Dance Music Magazines a lack of funding forced us to shut down and dispense. Joey continues to submit Music Reviews for Dance Music.About.com and continues to submit his Mixshow Charts to several outlets in the United States, Canada and the UK.
Outro
In short, Joey has gained the knowledge and experience necessary to carry him into the future. He has proved time and again that he can DJ with the best of the best. Although Joey remains proud but humble, he still acknowledges that he has a lot to learn. "My style, my thoughts, my opinions have always changed over time. I've come a long way and accomplished so much even though I realize I still have a lot to learn. I'm grateful that I'm learning from some of the best people in the music business. I have to take all the negative and positive experiences that I've endured and use it to my advantage to take me to the next level". Having earned the utmost respect from known Artists, Remixers, Producers, Promoters and DJ's around the world, Joey is well on his way to becoming one of the most up and coming DJ's in America.
Joey Rivaldo Is Currently Retired From The Dance Music Industry.
