Nova (Christened Shonte` Amber-LaNean Moss) is the type of artist that makes people notice everything about her. She first gained her enthusiam to write at the age of 5 where she began writing poems and singing songs off the radio. She was raised in a house with her 3 brothers and working mom. They grew up listening to oldies and primarily Hip Hop During this time Hip Hop was definitly on the rise and the world took notice of it and respected it. Yes, the days of Grandmaster Flash, Rakim, and Africa Bambataa were gone, but artist like Tu Pac, Biggie, Snoop Dogg, Dre, and Jay Z were on top and groups like Outlaws, Junior Mafia, Bone Thugs N Harmony and later the Ruff Ryders carried Hip Hop on its shoulders. This is by what Juelz Santana means by being an 80's baby and artists like Nova reflect the heritage of rap music. She was the only girl of four children. Born in Toledo, Ohio and raised in Columbus, Oh Shonte` was the product of her environment to begin with.
Although not every child is without a father, the most common type of household seem to be fatherless. Shonte` experienced great pain and grief with the absence of her father and at the age of 12 she turned to music to fill that void. Then even more with his death in 2002. Turnign to music was her only choice. Her older brother Daniel was the initiator. One day Daniel was caught writing to a beat that was on the radio, then another, then another still till finally he had a product. He called that product a verse. Daniel delivered his product in fine paper, so fine that Shonte` couldn't help but to take notice. He had writen his first rap under the name Phrophet and to escape the imperfect life into a superheros skin is all young Nova needed to find her purpose in life. In no time she had wrote her first rap that same day, and remembers the sarcasm in it. She quotes, "I shitted on my older brother the first time I spit a line, I've always been this good."
Before it was Nova it was Phrophetess, Eve (yes Eve), Dona, Lil Te`, and even Roxanne Shonte`. The name Nova was later decreed at the observance of Daniel on Shonte`. He quotes, "Her persona is so bright and ever changing youth; and yes, mortality could not keep my lil sis from being here for a very long time." Nova started off listening to hand me down music from Daniel such as Bush Babies, Bahamadia, Lauryn Hill, and The Fugess. Her favorite rap artist became Lauryn Hill while her favorite rap artist male became Nas. But life still was not as pretty as the music.
At Age 17 due to circumstances Shonte` was kiced out of the house and lived on the street for a very brief moment before moving into her distant cousin Paris' apartment. It was at this time when things took yet another turn. Because of the stress of life Shonte` found herself many times unable to deal and would slip away to the hands of drugs, alchohol, and suicidal attempts. Fighting became leisure and illegal activity was fast money therefore becoming the motivation to wake up each day. Music was still being recorded with RNS Entertainment but the life in the streets proved to be what is said to be one of her quick downfalls. From pimpin her ex boyfriend Don's prostitutues to hanging out with drug dealers at the Hilton Hotels, buying new clothes and shoes everyday living fast while moving packages of crack cocaine to south Ohio. Trouble seemed inevitable and it was this activity that landed her in jail with a felony three for harboring three loaded and concealed guns and a Felony 1 for possessing 65 grams of crack cocain and 12grams of marijuana.
When Shonte` got out of jail she headed straight to her hometown of Toledo, Ohio to help change her life around leaving behind her family. She enrolled into school at the University of Toledo and has counciled with many artists including Busta Rhymes, Joe Jackson, Usher, JaeKwon, and Shauwnna from DTP. She has developed ideas with DJ's including Mix Master Ice of NY, Domi of CO, DJ Autobon of TO, Scott Smooth of To, and many many more. Nova is president and CEO in standing with her partner Nina of PYNK LADIES ENTERTAINMENT. She has done countless shows all over Ohio, Kentucky, Atlanta, New York, Detroit, Canada, and Indiana. She has one countless awards for her music, poetry, and acting and very briefly modeled for Affinity Modeling Agency.
The artist Nova can be seen out soon with the release of her albumb entitled SuperNova and will be moving to Atlanta at her marketing teams request to push units.
