Buried Future was formed by guitarist Bobby de la O and drummer Phil Harrelson in the summer of 2005. Following the addition of rhythm guitarist Jesse Hendrix and bassist Andy Knutson, the group began to evolve beyond its humble thrash roots into more technical realms, incorporating odd (and often lengthy) time signatures; complex, dexterous melodies; and polyrhythms. With the recent addition of vocalist Dave Labedz, the band's lyrical themes have expanded beyond the standard gore-fest lyrical models typical of death metal, and into topics such as medical ethics, linguistics, and philosophy of science.
The group's latest effort, Symphony of Unnecessary Surgery, "comes roaring out of the traps, an absolutely raging display of death metal" (Zero Tolerance - UK), the album "guns down its listeners with breakneck time changes, zealous riffing, and surprisingly intelligible guttural vocals" (Madison A.V. Club), with "haunting and brutally honest" playing, and lyrics that "are compelling and command attention" (The Badger Herald). The album was named one of the Top 10 Madison-Area Releases of 2009 by the Madison A.V. Club.
