About Me

-

Hi. My name is Avery, although some of my friends have known me as Pac-man (because Pack is my surname) and others know me as the Cool Cat. Call me whichever you choose, I respond either way. Just don't call me Mr. Pack, that would be my dad. (May he RIP, the kind bastard)
I'm a mellow beatnik cat, good-natured, classy and intelligent, and yet wild and risque at the same time...a man with a warm heart of gold, but a naughty nature.
I can seem very reserved and shy when I first meet you, but when I do start to feel comfortable around you, that's when I gradually display my wilder side. Heh Heh.
I'm very much a free spirit, proud, independent and passionate...a person who likes to be free to enjoy, explore and experience life and not be shackled to some humdrum routine. Of course, in making a living you have to compromise this a little, but in truth I'm a person that loves his freedom and likes to be in control of his own existence.
This puts off some people in my life; I'm accused of loving to have my cake and eat it too. My response? Well why the hell not? I baked it and prepared it, so not only will I have it, but I'll eat it with great relish...I'm entitled, I worked damned hard and I deserve it. Somehow we forget that the key is to work to live and not the other way around. Friends often describe me as "old school" because I have a style and taste that goes well beyond my years. I must admit sometimes I do wonder if I haven't been on this planet before. I definitely feel like I'm an old soul and it's not a bad thing, it feels good to be among the precious few in the world that can still appreciate true value in people and things.
I've been living in Portland for close to two years now, having moved from the brrr and hustle of Chicago, and am having the time of my life in the City of Roses. Where else can you go hiking by day and then go clubbing at night? Portland is a groove! Apart from that I've met some cool and wonderful folks out here..many I can call true friends. What can I say? Life is fine in this wonderful Oregon town! I'm a total nut on music and can be pretty critical and opinionated about it. I dig today's music, but a lot of it just doesn't have that air of sophistication and style that existed in the days of Diz, Miles and Bird. Also, I feel that a lot of creativity and care that goes into creating new music has just gone by the wayside..not to say there's no good music out there but come on...too much sampling not enough imagination. Heh heh. Some of my other loves include sitting up midnights and watching some old flick on TV (or DVD), listening to the raucous and sizzle of the rain and thunder during a storm, taking pictures of wildlife as I'm hiking through Forest Park, or just hanging out and just getting totally fucking wasted...what can I say? I'm just your above-average joe.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Anyone with a positive and bright outlook on life. Anyone that sees life as a celebration rather than a curse. Anyone that likes pina coladas and getting caught in the rain.(I'm not kidding about that.) and no, I don't want to see your web-cam unless we're going to get it on for real. :-)

CREOLE PRIDE!
..
Cool cat, Iggy Pop. Here he is being real on Canada's CBC sometime in the late 70's.

(Also the label that introduced the Beatles to America, by the way.)

Music:

Well, here I'm as Brer Rabbit in the briar patch, as I used to sing and play music myself (particularly jazz, ska and doo-wop revival, I sang and played trombone). It's just my thing. Jazz is my absolute favorite type of music, but not so much this "smooth jazz" type that's on the air today. I prefer the wild sounds of the bop era, like Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie. Also I dig most old school R&B, especially most of your Stax/Volt artists (you know like Otis Redding, Johnnie Taylor, Wilson Pickett...etc.), rockabilly, classic rock, especially punk. And gotta love ska as my Caribbean roots dictate. Apart from listening and playing, I've been a record collectors for years, before moving to Portland I had thousands of 45's and albums. I still have a few with me now, couldn't possibly drag all of them 2000 miles. There aren't too many recording artists from the old school that I don't have some knowledge of on some level. Okay, next subject, this one will take all day. LOL
Liberace. How could a man so sharp and so talented be so gay? It boggles the mind.

Movies:

Well, I like most of the black 70's action flicks, Superfly and Trouble Man being my two all time favourites. (No, Blaxsploitation, will never roll from my lips...sorry:-))and other action movies, like Training Day, Dark Blue, Swordfish...really any action movie with a plot and a point to it. I also like movies I call quirky, like As Good As It Gets, Jerry Maguire, Sweet November, Ghost World, Barefoot in the Park...yes, three of them are romantic comedies, but their plots are unusual and that what makes them great to watch....

Television:

Well, I am really into 24...Jack Bauer is one cold bastard...I also like Becker, That 70's show (Hyde's the coolest character)....
and most of the classic Nick at Nite stuff, like The Jeffersons, Bob Newhart Show, Get Smart, and Mary Tyler Moore (mainly because she reminds me a lot of a Caucasian version of my mom.....

...I'm huge fan of Doctor Who from way back, forgot to mention that.

Books:

Anything by Jack Kerouac and Donald Goines. These are my absolute favourite authors.
I love to read. So rather than list all my favourite authors why don't I list some of my favourite books...like,
As I said anything by Ol' Jack Kerouac, you know like...
On The Road
Lonesome Traveler (I used to carry this book with me everywhere)
The Dharma Bums
Maggie Cassidy
The Subterreans
Dr. Sax
....etc, etc, etc...
And then Donald Goines...especially...
Whoreson,
Never Die Alone,
Daddy Cool,
and Kenyatta's Escape.
and then you got...
The Catcher In the Rye..J.D. Salinger
Franny and Zoey...J.D. Salinger
Portnoy's Complaint..Philip Roth
Mother Night....Kurt Vonnegut
There Eyes Were Watching God...Zora Neal Hurston
Cat's Cradle...Kurt Vonnegut
Tropic of Cancer...Henry Miller
Most books by D.H. Lawrence, such as...
Lady Chatterley's Lover,
The Fox,
The Virgin and the Gipsy,
The Rainbow,
and Women in Love
And more stuff like....
Dutchman....Amiri Baraka (or Leroi Jones)
The Spook That Sat By the Door...Sam Greenlee
Farenheit 451...Ray Bradbury
The Anti-Christ..Fredrich Nietzsche
The Bell Jar...Sylvia Plath
Howl...Allen Ginsburg
Pimp -- Story of My Life...Iceberg Slim
My Sweet Charlie...David Westheimer
Yeah, yeah, the list goes on and on, I love to read.
....and I love most erotica, too.
