Folk music, in the original sense of the term,
is music by and of the common people.
Folk music arose, and best survives, in societies not yet affected by mass communication and the commercialization of culture. It normally was shared by the entire community (and its performance not strictly limited to a special class of expert performers), and was transmitted by word of mouth.During the 20th and 21st century, the term folk music took on a second meaning: it describes a particular kind of popular music which is culturally descended from or otherwise influenced by traditional folk music. Like other popular music, this kind of folk music is most often performed by experts and is transmitted in organized performances and commercially distributed recordings. However, popular music has filled some of the roles and purposes of the folk music it has replaced.
Folk music is somewhat synonymous with traditional music. Both terms are used semi-interchangeably amongst the general population; however, some musical communities that actively play living folkloric musics (see Irish traditional music and Traditional Filipino music for specific examples), have adopted the term traditional music as a means of distinguishing their music from the popular music called "folk music," especially the post-1960s "singer-songwriter" genre. "What we're making isn't folk music, but savage intellectualism. We speak a language of a new world community that understands cultures can relate. So people who still speak of nationalism and racism or what separates us, they are inadequate for this time. Evolution goes on."

"We paint with a pretty broad brush when we talk about folk music."

The Folking Revolution is a re-occuring show that highlights various acoustic musicians - big and small, amateur and professional, hobbiests to facemelters - throughout the Fort Wayne area. It's a way for musicians to connect and for people to come together and have a good time!

Quote from an artist:
Wow, I am so so proud of this group, this mindset that will encourage any person at any level to express themselves without fear or judgement, but with sincerity that music can teach and heal! Thank you!

Fort Wayne Music dot Com Write-up:
I was very impressed with the quality of the event, and the enthusiasm of the young people who are involved. There were well over 16 young artists playing both covers and their own original music, in addition to the featured headliners. There was plenty of time for comradery, and appreciation of the musical talent provided. I came away from the event very impressed with a completely positive experience.
