Neurosis

Neurosis was a hardcore punk band that started up in Oakland (SF bay area) around 1985. They released their first album around 1987/88 - PAIN OF MIND. Their best work and an important piece of history in the bay area punk scene. After that came THE WORD AS LAW in 1990, and the SHORT WAVE WARFARE e.p. in 1991. These releases were cool but you can hear a definite change in direction. After a while they started playing crappy slow experimental shit, losing any elements of punk, which really sucked, but for a while they were fucking awesome.You can hear a definite suicidal tendencies/attitude adjustment influence in their early albums. Bands like Aus-Rotten, Caustic Christ, Deathtoll, etc. have similar sounds to early Neurosis and have probably been influenced by them.
