I have been living in Oregon since 1999, and making music from day 1. I began my music "career" playing drums and percussion in school jazz, marching, and symphonic bands in the small town of Erie, Colorado. At some point I became frustrated with the lack of creativity in learning some dusty old sheet music note for note, and my creativity was sparked by rhythm producers such as DJ Shadow, electronic music, and most of all, "golden age" hip hop music, which unfortunately was already starting its (sad) decline in popular music. I soon moved to Oregon and spent a number of years honing my skills in production and turntablism, producing tracks and scratches for 4 releases with the Oregon based group, The pHormula.
More recently, I have returned to my organic roots as a musician and am focusing my energy on playing drums and percussion again. I have helped form the band that I am currently playing in: MiMo. The name means Music In Music Out and to me, represents the idea that music is somewhat of a continuum, rather than a straight line. I believe that our music reflects this idea in that our live sets influence the melding of our own written songs, completely improvised pieces, and even some sprinkling of other artist's work.
My goal as a musician is to harness the creative potential in myself and my group members and help to meld this into something that people will seek to listen to and, hopefully, will remember. I've always felt that great music stands the test of time, no matter what changes life brings. I aim to make something that will stand the test of time and perhaps make a difference in someone's (or many people's) lives.
Peace,
Devin
