Influences: Rock Drummers Are Top AthletesPlaying the Drums for a rock band requires the stamina of a UK Premiership footballer, new research has revealed.Clem Burke, drummer with Blondie, was at the University of Gloucester UK on Monday 21 July 2008 revealing ground-breaking results of an 8-year research study, conducted by Dr Marcus Smith (University of Chichester) and Dr. Steve Draper (University of Gloucestershire), into the physiology of drumming.Clem was connected to equipment to measure his heart rate and oxygen uptake, and the levels of lactic acid in his blood. Results revealed that 90 minutes of drumming could raise Clem's heart beat to 190 beats a minute, burning 400-600 calories an hour, levels comparable to other top athletes.A unique dedicated drumming laboratory will be built at the University of Gloucestershire's Oxstall's campus and over the coming months it is envisaged that other professional drummers will come forward to undertake physiological profiling. It is also hoped that the results could help develop outreach programmes for overweight children who are not interested in sport.Through the Clem Burke Drumming Project, academics from the Department of Health, Sport and Social Care aim to join forces with the University's popular music degree course to develop community outreach programmes targeting overweight and disengaged youngsters. Dr Steve Draper said: "This is the first facility of its kind in the world and we are extremely excited about the potential here. It is a unique collaboration between science and the arts".Dr Marcus Smith said:"I first watched Clem Burke play live in 1980 as a 15 year old fan of Blondie and was amazed at the energy he put into his performance. In 1998 I wrote to Clem, having developed a career working with Olympic athletes, to see if he was interested in applying scientific methods to understanding the physiological demands of rock drumming. Contact was made and we met for the first time in 1999 at Wembley Arena. Over the past 9 years Clem has undertaken a number of physiological tests, including; heart rate monitoring during live performances, blood sampling and the measurement of energy expenditure (see www.clemburkedrummingproject.com for incremental drumming test to exhaustion). This work, in collaboration with Dr. Steve Draper and Dr. Chris Potter at the University of Gloucestershire, was presented at the recent 2008 European College of Sports Sciences Conference in Estoril, Portugal. The data showed not only how hard Clem worked during concerts (heart rate for Union City Blue 191 beats per minute) but also the significant amount of energy expended.Whilst top footballers were expected to perform once or twice a week, drummer's on tour perform a set daily and at different venues. Footballers can normally expect to play 40 to 50 games a year - but in one 12 month period, Clem played 90-minute sets at 100 concerts. Footballers find playing a Champions League game once every two weeks a drain, but these guys are doing it every day when they are on tour. It is clear that their fitness levels need to be outstanding - through monitoring Clem's performance in controlled conditions, we have been able to map the extraordinary stamina required by professional drummers.
