**DJ FeLL's BIO**
Hello, My Name is Gino. I am a Musik Maker / MusiK Editor / MusiK Collector / Musik Promoter / Live Musik Show Booking Agent & I guess I am a DJ :-P. I'm into all sorts of musik, as long as it doesn't suck and has some form of expression or passion to it.. So how did I become a DJ? Sit back grab some munchies and read below..
It all started back at a place called Sam's Burger Joint where DJ PD ZenHed was DJing @ a local goth night called Shadowland. I really dug the way he mixed mixed Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead into some EBM track the DJ before him had played. It was this mix that inspired me to become a DJ. The idea of mixing musik EKLECTIVELY!! Hollis was one of the first DJs I met that cleverly mixed in Classic & Rare Tracks from the 80's that people had forgotten about (or even heard at all), inspiring a new generation of listeners such as myself. Hooray for Hollis (PD ZENHED), for introducing me to such awesome bands as: Fad Gadget, Lords of the New Church, Severed Heads and OF COURSE, THE IMMORTAL >>>> KLAUS NOMI !!
After this, I went on to DJ at various little parties and such. Then, COMMUNION (the name before The Sanctuary) had this cool little event called, SO YOU WANNA BE A DJ.. I think I still Remeber most of my set: Mesh - Little Missle / Information Society - Going Going Gone / Severed Heads - Triangle Tangle Tango / Danse Society - Woman's Own / ... and a few more that i can't remember.
After that, I bugged the guys @ COMMUNION to let me DJ soo much that they actually agreed to have me DJ. I became one of the Resident DJ's for THE REFLEX - 80's Night. We did the typical top 40 80's stuff mainly, but I got quickly bored with playing that, so I started mixing in the stuff that I listen to.. The OTHER SIDE OF THE 80's. Thanks to the support of my fellow DJs Nick & Stevo it was not uncommon to hear : Pink Industry, The Glove, Abecedarians, Fad Gadget, Klaus Nomi, Xymox, Dead Can Dance, Bauhaus, Cocteau Twins, etc.. Enter>> THE RETRO-DIVISION. The Retro-Division was one of the longest lasting 80's nights since the Old Skool days (back when I was still playing nintendo :-P ). We attrached a bunch of the crowds that used to come out back in the day to hear the 80's UnderGround Musik that we were spinning @ The Retro-Division. Years followed and then.. I met a DJ that would Inspire me in a whole new way.. ENTER>>> David Milne a.k.a. DJ SUBSTANCE
Dave automatically recognized the music I was playing, as most of it was played in the days he DJed @ Phazez / Changes / Rumours etc... It was very refreshing to meet someone who actually knew this music well and was from the era that this music came from. Dave lived it all, He even got to see The Cocteau Twins LIVE!! (lucky ducker..) Of course, being the TRUE Music enthusiast that he is, Dave still has ALL OF HIS OLD RECORDS from back in the day. Dave and I traded a bunch of music together, and he even let me borrow ALL OF HIS VINYL!! I ripped some of the Best & Rarest tracks that he had, onto my computer. Thanks to Dave, I acquired Classic Vinyl Tracks from bands such as: Low Life, C Cat Trance, That Petrol Emotion, Axodry, Cabaret Voltaire, KraftWerk, Joy Division, Let The Tribe Grow, New Order, Signal Aout, The Assembly, The Essence, The Neon Judgement, Torch Song & Much Much More!!
As it turns out, The IMMORTAL Jesse Morales was Dave's DJ mentor as Dave was one of PD Zenhed's DJ mentors as PD ZenHed was my DJ mentor, I feel honored to be connected into the lineage of Awesome San Antonio Scene DJs.. even though I am nowhere near their Awesomeness .... yet .... ahh who am I kidding.. :-P
Dave is a master at beatmixing vinyl, I learned alot from him not only for musik sake but for technique as well (Something I've always hated before). By learning the basics of beatmixing it became apparent to me that you don't always have to go by the "THUMP THUMP THUMP" of each song, you can also go by rythmns and general sounds. Which brings me to my current state of DJing.. It is not uncommon to hear The Chameleons UK being play right after Depeche Mode, two radically different music styles, but those which follow the same basic beat. Holy crap, I've found the secret formula of DJing I've alway been looking for!!!
With the utmost desire to play these Lost Tunes of the 80's / 90's etc.. and with the gradual degradation of The Retro-Division's changing format.. turning it into a local hang out for Emos .. Dave & I Decided to form OTHERNESS : A Night Deticated to UnderGround Musik . We started off at The Sanctuary on Thursday nights. The night was growing steadily as people began to realize there was still a place to go to hear this kind of musik, but just as that happened, "the management" issue came into play. We started in the main dance area of The Sanctuary, but they kicked us to the infamous "broom closet" side room in favor of some other type of night.. The first week we spun in "the broom closet" would be our last, as "the management" of the sanctuary was being TOTALLY UNREASONABLE throughout the night saying that we were DJing too loud.. this is with 2 other DJs blasting musik on either side with a 10X bigger sound system and a hardcore band playing in the back!! We got fed up with this BS so we just packed up and left right in the middle of the night. It just so happens that night that the new owner of ATOMIX was there and he was totally understanding of our situation and mentioned to us that he was going to open a new venue..
It was at that time that I decided to leave Communion/The Sanctuary after 3 or 4 years of DJing. This was a very tough and sad decision to have to make, because I loved DJing with Nick & Stevo as we alway had such good times, but I just couldn't handle the way that "the management" was changing things for the WORSE and how things were just destine to die out. I had to move on. SO, we moved Otherness to Fridays @ Atomix. The response was PHENOMINAL!! Since we did not limit ourselves to just 80's musik, we brought in people from all walk of life to come in, hang out, have a few, then dance like crazy till the end of the night. This is the way it should be @ a club and is the way that is has been ever since moving to Atomix.
As a month or two went by, Dave announced that he was going to be stationed in Denver, CO and would be leaving soon. I did not know what to do!! I couldn't do this night alone, I needed someone else to help with DJing and how could I try to fill someone like Dave's shoes. At the same time, Dave was hanging out with fellow DJ Malediction who had been DJing @ another venue. Dave told Ely about the move and asked if he wanted to take his place. I've always wanted to work with Ely again since the 1 time we DJed together at Sin13, so it was only natural that we get Ely to help us!! THANKFULLY, Ely agree to help with Otherness, and the MORBID HYBRID was born.. 2 people previously from the "opposite sides of the fence" actually Joined Forces in the sake of keeping Good Musik Alive in San Antonio!! We continue this mission as we DJ Every Friday Night
As for the future, I don't know.. we wil just have to see what happens. Hopefully things will only get better. Thank You for taking the time to read this little story & I would also like to Thank Everyone that has supported me and encouraged me over the 5 year of this DJing madness.. KEEP LISTENING TO MUSI(K) <<-- in case you are wondering, i often spell musik with a K instead of a C, because C stands for CORPORATE AMERICAN MUSIC & K stands for KOOL ASS MUSIK !! :-D Don't Listen to Music, Listen To Musik..
