1976-1998
On October 6, 1998, Matthew Shepard, a student at the University of Wyoming, met Aaron James McKinney and Russel Arthur Henderson in a bar. After Shepard admitted he was gay, they talked him into leaving with them, at which point they drove to a secluded location outside Laramie. Once there, these men mercilessly beat him with a pistol, tortured him, then tied him up onto the fence, and left him for dead in the freezing weather. He was discovered 18 hours after the brutal attack, his unconscious body initially mistaken for a scarecrow.
Matthew remained in a coma for six days before he died from his injuries on October 12, 1988 at 12:53 a.m. with his family at his bedside. Reverend Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas crashed Shepard's funeral on October 17, 1998 and claimed divine retribution had killed Shepard for the sin of being a homosexual. He and his flock held signs proclaiming "GOD HATES FAGS" and similar slogans.
Matthew's murder brings together so many issues that are raging in this world and reminds us yet again what ignorance is capable of. Matthew dedicated his life to building a better world. Perhaps his passing has done so for us all. Especially those of us who share his sexual orientation.
