Gypsy RoseWhat is that I spy? A voice calls out, I am a gypsy rose What is a gypsy rose, I ask the voice answers, I bring beauty where there is none I add uniqueness where conformity rules Are there more of you, I ask I am a one of a kid, the flower answers May I keep you in a pot and always near to bring me joy, I ask I would wither and die leaving only an ugly reminder of my lost beauty I cannot be held for soon I must uproot and move to share myself elsewhere, answers the flower Cannot you stay and be near lending me light and color I will visit you often, I ask No I must move before I feel the frost in my roots, responds the rose The frost never comes here it is always warm, I say Frost always comes wherever I am, the rose responds The The air takes a chill as the cool winds blow The rose shivers in the frosty gusts I must be leaving now for the frost has come, declares the rose My offer still stands I will pot you and place you in a greehouse all of your own, I respond But I cannot. I will die. Do not mourn me in my journey. You will always have a memory of me in your heart, says the rose Will I ever see you again, I ask Perhaps I cannot say as to when or if I will be this way again, answers the rose So here I sit in the gloom bolstered by my brief time with the gypsy rose. -B.
