TO GRAMMY: R.I.P. March 1st, 2006- Sandra Shearer HuntSandra Joan Shearer entered this world on December 14, 1926 in Seattle, Washington. She passed away at her home in Arcata on March 1, 2006. Mom was a joy to everyone who knew her. Gregarious and warm, she had a wonderful, witty sense of humor and would chat with just about anyone. She grew up in Seattle and split time between her hometown and Palm Springs, California. She attended Garfield High School in Seattle and Westlake School for Girls in Beverly Hills, and went to college in Pomona. After finishing her studies, she modeled and worked as a buyer for I. Magnin’s in Palm Springs and Los Angeles. It was while modeling that she met a young Naval officer at a fashion show in Palm Springs. A city girl at heart, she fell for the charming northern Californian and married Dr. V. Everett Hunt in 1949 moving to Arcata, where she raised her children, Heidi, Holly and Howard. She was a group leader for her daughter’s Girl Scout troop, was active in many volunteer organizations on the North Coast, including Hospice, and was a charter member of Humboldt Sponsors. For years she worked as a bookkeeper in her husband’s practice and went on to spend more than a decade volunteering in Sheri Griffith’s kindergarten class at Jacoby Creek School—something she was immensely proud of. An avid golfer, she had been the captain of the Baywood Women’s Golf Association. She loved gardening, playing bridge with her friends and socializing. Her close group of friends played an important role in her life. Mom was very proud of her family and enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow up. She didn’t like to cook but she could set a great table. She chased more than one turkey across the kitchen floor when it fell out of the oven, fought off the dogs and then served it to her guests. She loved throwing her kids in the car to chase after fire engines. She taught her children to stand on their heads by personal example. She learned to snow ski at the age of 49. Her ability to see humor in a situation, honest character and law-abiding nature distinguished her as an incredible individual. Those who knew her knew she could tell a story like no other. Some of her favorite things to do included traveling, shopping, walking her dogs, visiting with friends and having the whole family together. Mom’s greatest wish was to live independently and with dignity. She was able to do so. Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Florence Shearer, her brother and sister Bud Shearer and Dorothy Larsen, and her husband Everett. She is survived by her daughter Holly Hunt; daughter Heidi Kagarakis and son-in-law Frank; son Dr. Howard Hunt and daughter-in-law Jan; her grandchildren, Courtney, Amy and Cameron Hunt and Ryan and Alexis Kagarakis; and her beloved dogs Muffin and O’Malley. She is also survived by numerous friends, family members and the community she spent the past 56 years living in. Special thanks to Diane DelBiaggio, her daughter Rose Marie and Ruth Dalton for their help and companionship throughout the years. Sandra was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed by those close to her and those who knew her as a regular at the Coffee Break in Sunny Brae and at the Arcata Farmer’s Market. R.I.P...........my heroes would have to be my family. They are always there for me and help me when i need it most also my friends. They stick up for me and give me advise all the time
