About Me

UNDERSTANDING SINGLE OUT 10/06 .. Born in Fulham, London, songwriter, musician and producer Robb Scott's music incorporates broken beats, jazz funk and Afro Cuban rhythms, all accompanied by lush string and horn arrangements and soulful vocals. His first single "Fallin'" has been released last winter on the Sunshine Enterprises record label with remixes by Champion Soul and Domu. Also available will be two tracks Passion and "Havana Affair" . Both of these tracks were written by and feature Robb on vocals, Fender Rhodes and acoustic guitar and can be heard on the Champion Soul album, "Excursions" (Lifeline Records/Japan). Also in the pipeline are two superb broken beat tracks "Freedom Fear" and "Anything You Like" which feature musicians Jonathan Maron (Groove Collective, Meshell Ndegeocello ) on bass, Satch Hoyt (Burnt Sugar Arkestra / Grace Jones) on flute, Fabio Morgera on flugel horn and Mary Edwards on backing vocals. Both tracks are to be released on the Afrophonic Recordings label. Robb Scott's music career spans well over fifteen years beginning in the mid 80's. After escaping suburbia and squatting in Brixton for three years, Robb would frequent the london underground nightclub scene of clubs like The Raw, Whitetrash, Gossips, subterranea and the Pig, along with the live jazz music scene of clubs like 606, Ronnie Scott's and the Jazz cafe when it was still only just a hole in the wall in Islington. Along with six other friends they formed the 999 crew and began organising and promoting various club nights and parties at Crazy Larry's, Underworld in Camden and 41 Beak street which is where Robb began spinning records, basically because in those days "we couldn't afford to pay a DJ for something we could do ourselves ! ". At about the same time Robb started writing songs with Elizabeth Troy, a 15 year old chanteuse with an incredible voice whom he had met whilst he was working at a shoe shop in Carnaby Street. Liz would later find huge top ten chart success with tracks 'Crazy Love' and 'Sincere' with 2 step mogul, M J Cole. Robb and Liz would spend hours holed up in his flat in Battersea writing songs together at the piano, but it wasn't until Robb joined the now defunct acid jazz collective, Action People playing Fender Rhodes that their endevours would really take form. When the band needed to fill the void left by previous vocalist Rio Hendricks, Robb suggested Liz Troy, who's mature vocals sat perfectly against the bands funky landscape of sound. Action People signed to the independent Revco record label and would eventually release an acid jazz album in 1993 called 'JAZ, JAZZ!, JAZZ?'. During this period Robb was working at PRS and met loads of people in the record biz and ended up doing television, video, dancing and vocal chores for artists like Daryl Hall (Hall and Oates), Gwen McCrae and D'Influence. Relocating to New York in the mid 90's, Rob started playing live gigs with his guitar on the downtown singer/songwriter circuit, with residencies at venues like CBGB's gallery, the Living Room and Downtime. Independently releasing a debut cd 'Cyclone' under the moniker of Durry (his middle name), he recruited the talents of Teena Marie / Prince protégé Jill Jones, Adriana Kaegie from Kid creole and the coconuts and guitar virtuoso Chris Whitley. After being introduced to deep house and broken beat by friend and dj Vanessa Beck, Robb's musical direction took a sharp 90° turn. Inspired by the new - found genre, Robb returned to dj-ing at clubs like Moomba, Halo and Joe's Pub and began to concentrate on writing music from a more rhythmic standpoint. Producer and friend Andrew Edward Brown had heard some of the material that Robb was working on and he himself was in the process of putting together tracks for the forthcoming Champion Soul album, and so asked Robb to submit some material for their project. On completing that, Robb has signed to austrian label Sunshine Enterprises for his next project.
