BUTTERFLY RECORDINGS BIO
In January 2004 producer and renowned musician YOUTH mentioned to SIMON TONG (ex Verve; The Good, The Bad And The Queen) that he was thinking of starting a folk label and asked if he would be interested in being part of it. Tong immediately said yes.
The two shared a common interest in folk and acoustic music from the early traditions to the folk revivals of the 60s through to the contemporary post folk movements of the 21st century, and gave themselves a few loose, breakable rules - To be:
1. Predominantly acoustic
2. Predominantly English in origin.
3. Recorded in the artists’ own intimate environment as much as possible.
With no rules broken, What The Folk was born.

BUTTERFLY REVIEWS
‘What the Folk - volume 1’ was released on 23/03/07.
Here’s what said:
"Folking fantastic compilation"
"You'd think Simon Tong would be too busy making albums about London with Damon Albarn. But together with producer Martin Glover, he's fathered the most innovative folk label in recent years. Now comes this, a mouthwatering showcase of what is to come. Opener 'Crawled Out Loose' by Duke Garwood & Paul May is a ballsy slab of experimental blues showing the album's grittier side. At the other end of the scale is Samantha Marais' stunning 'Ordinary Man' - a sultry mix of ramshackle alt.acoustics and ethereal vocals. Gathering artists from all corners of the country and combining everything from electronica to psychedelia, 'What The Folk' straddles genres effortlessly while maintaining a sense of community."
NME Rating 7/10

Here’s what Magazine said:
"Inspired by Alan Lomax’s historic field recordings, producer Youth and The Good The Bad & The Queen’s Simon Tong put out word they were looking for new acoustic artists. This is the result. Some of it is traditional (Lisa Knapp’s Blacksmith), some is backdropped by tasteful electronics (Samantha Marais’s Ordinary Man), some is closer to ragged blues (Duke Garwood and Paul May’s Crawled Out Loose). Almost all of it should interest those who enjoy sniffing out the obscure."

INDIGO MOSS
So many styles and influences collide in the music of Indigo Moss: you can imagine The Velvet Underground trapped in the Appalachians or Phil Spector creating his wall of sound with a jug band. And many more intriguing combinations.

DUKE GARWOOD
Brixton's very own blues feedback specialist. Garwood has been compared to Mark Lanegan, Devendra Banhart and the Reverend Robert Wilkins – among others. NME said: 'Garwood’s impressive set of blues shines a modern torch on the dusty archives of blues-folk legends Jackson C Frank and John Fahey.'
The Wire said: 'Flavourful avant blues…Duke Garwood is British but sounds as though he roams the Vermont Hills with the Child Of Microtones gang.'
