Rube is a vinyl record enthusiast and Whodini era hip-hop head. His music obsession took hold on a frozen Christmas morning in his hometown of Sanborn, Minnesota. On that day he received the Police’s Zenyata Mendata LP as a Christmas gift. It would be the first record in a collection of thousands.
At the age of 15, he walked into a Brainerd, Minnesota music shop and spent his entire summer earnings on an Alesis HR-16 drum machine. Rube ignored all sensible advice to return the beatbox. Instead, he immersed himself in learning the fine art of making beats.
Sometime in the early 2000’s, he slipped fellow Minnesotan DJ Freddy Fresh a demo version of “Get Up!†Freddy gave him some encouraging feedback but not an agreement for a release on Fresh’s own Howlin’ Records, that he desired.
Then, on a routine visit to Vital Vinyl Records in Minneapolis he stumbled upon Jazz & Milk Breaks vol. 1. The EP’s clever electric tape cover art was too appealing to pass up. Upon hearing the EP at the listening station he promptly purchased the record. He was so enamored of the sounds that he immediately trekked to his buddy Zenrock’s pad in St Paul for another listen on Zen’s big home system. At Zenrock’s suggestion, he sent label owner Dusty a snippet of “Dharma Bumrushâ€. He thought the label might dig his bop, and swing era infused tunes.
He was right, and in 2007, Rube’s first vinyl, “Another Gone Record†EP hit the shelves.
Though the EP was mostly ignored in his own neighborhood, (a copy still remains in Cheapo Records and the 5th Element in Minneapolis) the record did well in the UK, Germany and Japan.
Since 2007, Rube has collaborated with some notable Twin Cities hip hop crews, providing remixes and or/production for Big Zack from Kanser, Big Quarters, See More Perspective, and Abzorbr.
Rube now promotes and creates his new jazz age aggregations from an apartment in Manhattan. He is currently writing a book about New York’s vinyl record culture.
