About Me

Hailing from Blackpool, Lancaster and Morecambe, but now living in Manchester, Surreal Knowledge are a four piece hip hop group consisting of Derogatory a.k.a Stoopid iLL (DJ / Producer / MC), Jay Madden a.k.a Homicide (MC), Mr Dick (DJ / Producer / MC) and Da Sharpest a.k.a Swamp Thing (DJ / Producer).
SK take influence from various forms of music, drawing upon elements of Rock, Jazz, Funk, Soul, R n B and Electro with all the elements of Hip Hop. Surreal Knowledge tracks are made up of Sampled Loops & Stabs, Live Instrumentation, Scratches, Rapping and occasionally Singing.
... "We take elements from allsorts of things then try to put them together into something that is proper Hip Hop, but not something that only serious Hip Hop fans can understand or enjoy"
The group have performed live across the UK and have supported many established acts such as Tim Westwood, Adam F, Scratch Perverts, Klashnekoff, Skinnymanand DJ Cash Money to name a few. The Surreal Knowledge live show consists of DJ tricks, MCing Original Material and Freestyling (along with the odd stage prop and bright green operating scrubs thrown in for good measure!) Mr Dick and Derogatory have also performed several times with Grand Central Record’s Funky Fresh Few, after appearing on their album Stealing.
If all that wasnt enough, the group have also worked with Blackpool’s Primitive Form crew, providing them with beats, help in the studio and DJing for live sets. In turn, both groups have recently received exposure on North West radio and performed at live shows together.
Surreal Knowledge are aiming to get their music heard on a larger scale and are seeking recording and / or management deals. SK are also currently in the process of organising an independent release of their music, after forming and working closely under the Tactical Thinking Records label.

Sounds Like: “Yeh man I’m in this! Love the whole vibe of this tune and the lyrical content is right up my street. Kicking off with the National Anthem the solid beat soon drops with Birmingham’s Deadline dropping a super sick 16 bar about the state of the home-grown scene. Derogatory follows with a more political take on the situation and Jay Madden comes with a frantic flow like some mad man adding good character to the song. Love the beat and all the cuts by Mr. Dick which make it all 100% UK Rap. Make sure you track this one down. Good stuff.”

“Derogatory, Jay Madden, Mr Dick and Da Sharpest make this four man crew who are originally from Blackpool and Morecambe. They’ve been together for four years after meeting at Preston college on their music course but since then have moved onto university and are currently spread all over the UK. That though, hasn’t affected their passion or quality of their music. First track ‘Here come the British’ is very much a war cry for UK hip hop while also speaking on what they call “half baked UK rap shit” and even leaving a few choice words for the Queen! ‘Looking for answers’ is a very intelligent approach to some of the questions we’ve all asked regarding our existence and who governs how we live. Lyrically this gets full marks. It’s so good I had to call them to get permission to air it on my show. These boys are excellent in all departments-beats, rhymes, flows, cuts and concepts.”

“…For me, the shining stars of the night were Surreal Knowledge who were nothing less than brilliant. The guys took my breath away with their dexterity on the decks and really were a joy to watch. Following a good 20 minutes of showing off on the decks (and quite frankly they had something to show off about) the MC’s took to the stage performing some quality original material. Despite some sound difficulties which made it quite difficult to hear the lyrics, they put on a fantastic show and made up for technical hitches with their bounding enthusiasm. These guys are definitely ones to watch."
