**********************************************************
It all started for me as a kid in 1987 when I saw Prince live in Paris during the Sign o the Times tour. I knew then I wanted to make music for a living and immersed myself in funk music (Sly Stone, Parliament-Funkadelic, Bootsy Collins, James Brown to name but a few).I took on the guitar around the age of 16 and by 18 I was doing songs on an old four track with an old bass, a drum machine and a Casio keyboard. I cut my teeth with bands in Paris, mostly funk, with a hint of soul and rock.
Then I shaved my head and took the ferry boat to London at the tender age of 21. London at the time was into a Jungle and Drum and Bass craze and it swallowed me whole. A year or 2 later I met a sax-playing French/Polish gypsy by the name Simbad. We clicked right away and built a studio in the Truman Brewery on Brick Lane, East London.
As we gradually got a hang of making electronic music, we released our first 12” called “Blow your blues away” under the name “Twitch” which was played by Radio Nova in Paris every day for 2 years in a row! By then we were both djing more and more as we both used to be vinyl junkies from when we were teenagers. We then had a go at different styles: Broken Beat under the name “Heal”, Afrobeat under “Les Barons” etc…
Then change of name and faze: it was time for “Marathon Men” to hit the racks and smash dancefloors. After acclaimed remixes (see below) and 12 inches on their own promotional label “Je ne sais quoi Recordings”, their track "In Paradise" reached the top 30 of the year on Gilles Peterson’s Radio 1 show, "Worldwide". Finally they released an album on Chillifunk records called “Blessings”.Their remixes and 12’s can always be found on top playlists from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Laurent Garnier, Norman Jay, and Moody Man.
So what’s fresh? Simbad is releasing an album on Rawfusion and Freddy’s going back to his roots making guitar based organic music (check out new album). The Marathon men still dj a lot. Check out their 5-years running night at the vibe bar called “Je ne sais quoi” every third Saturday of the month.
