Shades Of Devastation is a Metal band from Sacramento, California, formed in 2005 under the name Avermournea.
History
Avermournea
In late 2005, Justin Moss was approached by Joseph Diones about starting a like minded music project after spending years searching for somebody with similar music interests. Justin, who at the time was in a local Black Metal band Ultra Corpse spent much time discovering a sound and niche for the band which had not been determined. The following year the Orchestral sound was born under the name Avermournea a name derived from both Justin's and Joseph's High School given nicknames (Mournea and Averoigne respectively). In early 2007 and only one show, both Joseph and Doug as well as other auditioning members decided to part ways.
Den Mørke Natt
Summer 2007 Guitarist Michael Tallman approached Justin to revive the old music of Avermournea. Justin then called on James Castro to play bass. During Early 2008, James and Justin decided on the band name Den Mørke Natt (Norwegian for "The Dark Night") and during the Summer brought on Dave Faria as full time drummer. Through unfortunate events the end of the summer marked the band's parting ways with Dave. Again during the beginning of 2009, the band auditioned Michael (Mike) Radican and later decided to bring him up to a full time member.
Shades Of Devastation
Through more unfortunate events the band later parted ways with Michael (Tallman) and recruited James to guitars as well as a new band name "Shades Of Devastation". The band is currently working on finishing their full length album/demo with the current members and auditioning final members to complete the lineup.
Musical Style
Shades Of Devastation fuses Classical Orchestral, Movie Scoring with European Melodic Death Metal. The band more or less attempts to blend two unconventional and extreme genres including influences from other genres such as Romantic, Jazz and even Pop/Rock. The atmosphere is portrayed to be a proper and formal artistic expression of life, humanity in a melancholy, but rageful perspective. Lyrical concepts include Armageddon, lost hope, injustices of humanity, life/death, fear and dealing with personal demons. While being romanticized, the concepts and stories are non-fiction, based upon true stories.
2009 Album Demo
During the the project's span of 4 years, the band has produced 10 songs which has been periodically updated with a total of 5 songs completed. The current demo status is incomplete but currently titled ''The Grand Despair''.
In The Media and Fanbase
During the Summer of 2006, Justin had participated in a local music camp competition known as Skip's Music Stairway to Stardom, where he was an accomplished coach the following year. The competition gave notice to Zoran from the show "Capital Chaos". He awarded Justin with the honorable month's "Shredder Of The Month" of November 2006 and was brought on to the show as a member of Avermournea. Within a few weeks of the airing Avermournea was a set band in the local area, with booking agents flocking to book them shows immediately.
In 2008, Shades Of Devastation ranked the Sounclick Metal Charts at number 2 with the song "Silence". All of their songs have placed in the top 10 in the Black/Death Metal sub category and top 50 in the Metal Charts. alongside bands such as Periphery who have done a supporting tour with the act Devil Driver.
