About Me

MJFF 2010 APRA Composer Commission
Following the success of the 2006, '07, ‘08 and '09 Melbourne Jazz Fringe Commissions, which resulted in the creation of extraordinary new works by Jex Saarelaht, Colin Hopkins, Erik Griswold, and Ren Walters, the Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival is now calling for submissions for the 2010 Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival Commission.
The Commission provides $1000 to a composer to write an extended work for an ensemble (between 5 and 10 piece) of his or her choice and also provides rehearsal and performance fees for ensemble players. The commissioned work will be presented at the 2010 Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival on April 23. Interested parties are asked to provide a brief description of their proposal and a biography on one A4 page (font size 12 pt minimum). This should be emailed to [email protected]. Audio support material is also welcome (1 CD) and should be sent to:
Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival
Commission Submission
PO Box 2197
St Kilda West VIC 3182.
Applications must be received by no later than 5pm, Friday 12 February 2010; the winning submission will be announced on Friday 19 February 2010. Interstate and international applicants please note The Commission does not cover the cost of airfares or accommodation.
Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival wishes to thank APRA, without whose invaluable assistance this event would not be possible

The Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival was formed to celebrate Melbourne’s burgeoning creative jazz scene. Building on the unprecedented success of the 2005-09 festivals, we are once again ready to party with ten days and nights of original music featuring Melbourne’s most celebrated improvisers plus interstate guests. Come and hear some of the musicians that give Melbourne the right to claim to be the jazz capital of the southern hemisphere.
Thanks always to our sponsors Big Trousers, APRA, Federation Square, Extempore, Victoria University and Brolly, and our partners Melbourne Jazz Co-op and the Starlight Children's Foundation.

Sounds Like: Review of Jazz Fringe 2007The Age Tuesday May 8th 2007 “The two high profile events of the Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival – the Commission Concert and Big Arse Sunday – are held only a week apart, but in some ways could not be more different. You could take a five-minute sample from each event… and wonder if both could possibly hail from the same musical planet. Yet it is precisely this creative catholicity that gives Melbourne Jazz Fringe its edge.”The live music network, New Found Frequency, recorded many of the concerts which are available as streams or on CD through their website www.newfoundfrequency.com Concerts available include:20th Century Dog at Big Arse Sunday (anyone who was there knows that this was a truly incredible set)Colin Hopkins Trio with Silo String Quartet at BMW Edge (Commission Concert)Elana Stone/Stephen Magnusson/Julien Wilson at BMW EdgeTwelve Tone Diamonds at Big Arse SundayThere are heaps of other great sets available…please check out the New Found Frequency site, they did a really excellent job with these recordings and were great guys to work with.Congratulations to Anita Hustas who was the winner of the inaugural Atlantis Sound Recording Award. Anita leads the trio Anenome, which was featured in the festival and performed in a number of other projects. In addition, Anita is on the organising committee for La Mama Musica. Thanks to all of our sponsors for their generous support. In particular to our key partners: Victoria University, Melbourne Brass and Woodwind and Big Trousers. Thanks also to NMIT, Atlantis Sound, APRA, RRR and Federation Square.
