I love going fast, kickin' ass, slugging beers, and crankin' tunes. I'm a professional fighter and coach at Icon Fitness and MMA in Oahu. If I'm not training or coaching, I love skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, and dirt biking. Basically anything that involves the risk of personal injury. Also love spending time with friends and fam, tattoos, outdoor adventures, and reading and learning about new philosophies, and anything that helps me become a better fighter and coach.

Chris "The Crippler" Leben was born July 21st, 1980 in Portland Oregon - raised there with his younger sister and older brother. As a child, Chris always preferred alternative sports such as skateboarding, dirt biking, and snowboarding. However, it wasn’t until middle school that he would dive into the arena of combat sports.
Although Chris had never been in a street fight he began to take wrestling in school and was pretty good at it. In addition to wrestling, he chose to enroll himself in boxing classes. The classes were on the other side of town, oblivious to distance, Chris would catch the bus everyday after school to the boxing center. He trained consistently and began getting pretty good with technique. He never competed in boxing but enjoyed learning each and everyday.
"The quick story was that I boxed and wrestled in high school and after practice, me and my friends used to hang out around the trainer and do arm bars and stuff that we saw when we watched the UFC. We tried to emulate the guys, and after I got out of high school, one day my brother said, "Hey, I'm selling cars at this place and they're beating the crap out of each other in the back." It turned out that that was Team Quest, it used to be Matt Lindland's Auto Wholesale, and they had the little room in the back that wasn't finished at all, with a couple mats. Matt Lindland's back there, Randy Couture is back there, Nate Quarry is back there, Evan Tanner...and I was going, "Holy Crap!"
So, I started training. I think I was Team Quest's twelfth student ever. I started training and after about five days of training, everyday I came in, I'd ask my coach and you can ask him, he tells the story all the time. Everyday I came in and I didn't say "Hi", I didn't say "Hello", I'd say, "Robert, you got me a fight yet? You get me a fight yet, you get me a fight yet?" And soon as I had that first fight, there was no stopping me, I just kept on moving up. You always want to prove yourself again and again and fight the top competition and that's what I did. A win and win and win and I went and fought Mike Swick, then after that fight, Randy came to me about the Spike TV show and said "Hey, there's a great opportunity. You should make a video and send it in." So, that's exactly what I did; I sent it in, and they brought me down for casting and they liked my personality and I was on the show. Having won the Gladiator Challenge, Sportfight, and WEC middleweight titles helped a lot too - and here I am."
Chris did not win the television competition but went on to fight in The Ultimate Fight Night Finals where he viciously pounded out his opponent, Jason Thacker. The Crippler then racked up 5 consecutive octagon victories knocking out Jorge Rivera, submitting Edwin Dewees by armbar, and battling two decision wins over both Patrick Cote and Luigi Fioravanti...
Chris' biggest test to date came at Ultimate Fight Night 5, when he took his first UFC loss and first knockout to world class striker Anderson "The Spider" Silva (who then horribly KO'd and claimed the UFC Middleweight Belt from Champion Rich Franklin in his very next fight).
Taking his loss in true samurai spirit, Chris roared back two months later to fight Jorge Santiago. Chris battled through the first round trading shots with the American Top Team striker but came out blazing and knocked out Santiago with a crushing left hook early in the second round. Bouncing back after defeat he moved his record up to 6-1 in the UFC.
A few months later, The Crippler made his PPV debut on arguably the biggest card the UFC has ever promoted - UFC 66: Liddell/Ortiz II. Chris took on submission expert Jason MacDonald and dominated the fight until he was caught in an extremely unorthedox guillotine but - refused to tap and was choked out late in round two. Chris took the loss as a learning experience and still boasts an extremely impressive 17-3 MMA record and is 6-2 in the ocatgon, proving that the Crippler is indeed a dangerous, top rated middleweight contender in the UFC.
Currently, the Crippler is back in the gym working with Team Quest and AMC. He is always striving to be the best fighter in the world and is tirelessly working on filling holes in his techniques and rounding out his fight game with training, training and training. Chris Leben is young, dangerous, expereinced and the cat is fired up and only getting better.
In the world of MMA and the UFC...2007 is going to be the year of the Crippler.
Chris gets a ton of emails everyday from people asking how he gets in shape for fights, what his workout regimen is like, what kind of diet he follows, etc. So here's a list of the top 10 things that have contributed to Chris' success as a fighter. Enjoy.
1. I like to split up my workouts throughout the day. Drill and work cardio in the morning, and then do hard rounds at night.
2. Switch to light beer.
3. Eat lots of vegetables. Don't eat dairy products. Nuts are good.
4. Don't start drinking beer until after noon.
5. Plyometric exercises are an excellent way to get into fighting shape.
6. Don't have sex at least a week before your fight. Aw who am I kidding...
7. Try to drink at least a gallon of water a day.
8. Line your mouthpiece with chew. This will help it stay in better, and it'll give you that extra boost of energy during your fight. I prefer Copenhagen.
9. Before your fight, shave your entire body and cover yourself with lotion. This will help you slip out of submissions easier.
10. Don't shower the day before your fight. On second thought, make it 3 days. Don't brush your teeth, either.
Now I'm not going to guarantee that they will work for everyone, but hopefully you found these tips useful enough.
