Music is in Bruce Gainsford's blood. Born in Wellington, New Zealand into a family of musicians, he was learning to play music as he was learning to talk. Bruce bought his first guitar on Sunset Boulevard at age 12 and his fate was sealed: A Life of Music.
The following year he bought a 4 track tape recorder and started recording his own compositions. Bruce went on to study Jazz guitar for two years at Wellington's Conservatorium of Music. Soon UK MTV made it through the airwaves to New Zealand and the desire to form a band took hold – inspiring Bruce to pack his bags for London.
One month after landing in London Bruce joined a band, Vega4, which was to take over the next eight years of his life. Over that time the band released two albums, enjoying numerous world tours and worldwide airplay.
Vega4 captured the attention of uber-DJ Paul Van Dyk after their first album, resulting in a collaboration track – the hugely successful 'Time of Our Lives'. Bruce was bitten by the dance music bug and Styrafoamkid was born.
Over the next few years he began remixing his band's own tracks and then branched out to other artists. When the band went their separate ways in 2008 Styrafoamkid was able to turn his full attention to production. He is now regularly approached by artists from various musical genres for remixes, most recently Robyn; Kiwi sensation Minuit and Aussie success story Gotye. His Techno Squirrels Remix of "Love Comes First" features on the latest Cream Ibiza Compilation and Ministry of Sound Tech Euphoria Compilation.
Obviously production goes hand in hand with a love of spinning tunes and in a couple of short years Styrafoamkid has gone from DJing at parties to playing club nights at most of London's top clubs including Ministry of Sound, Koko, Heaven, The End and Pacha.
Bruce is also able to continue his passion for the guitar by playing in Paul Van Dyk's live band set up with gigs ranging from the Winter Music Conference in Miami to Russia and Prague so far this year.
