Kim McMechan spent her childhood pretending to practice her minuets when really, she was trying to write songs somewhere in genre between Abba and John Denver. You can't imagine what a terrible combination this was.
In 2000 and 2001, while living in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Kim performed and contributed 13 songs to a series of compilation albums which have collectively sold, to date, nearly 100,000 copes and garnered Kim radio play on radio stations across North America and Australia.
In 2005 she released her first solo work, Little Grey House, and EP which gathered some lovely reviews from The Georgia Straight (Vancouver) and Uptown Magazine (Winnipeg).
In 2007, she took best New Artist at the Okanagan Music Awards and her song Parachute won the Songbird West Songwriting Contest with Music BC.
"I'm not in a position to tour a lot right now, although I play frequently around the province and in Alberta." she tells eVent Magazine while her 2 year old balances a Barbie on her guitar. "I spend a lot of time writing and composing and weaving words into poems and lyrics and for me the goal is to get my songs out into the world as much as possible so that when it's time to hit the road in a few years, I have a reputation that will have preceeded me."
Although fans are pestering her for a new solo record and she recently finished recording what she'd hoped to be her second release with producer Danny McBride (former guitar player for Chris deBurgh), it looks like it'll be a little while yet.
"I loved the songs and the recordings, and I loved working with Danny McBride, but the financial side of the project started to unravel at the end." she says, shrugging. "The paperwork became too much for me. I'm a lot more clear on what I want now, and where I want to go."
Meanwhile, her publisher has something to work with while she makes arrangements to record again sometime this summer.
"Another great song penned by Kim McMechan, Canada's best-kept secret."
