The Seven Deadly Sins are an Edinburgh based band formed by Alex Moran. Alex has seen the world. Born in the smoke and buzz of Notting Hill, London, Alex spent the majority of his childhood in the Midlands before being uprooted as a teenager to spend his formative years on the opposite side of the world in Australia. Having taken the opportunity and embraced the rich experience of an alternative culture (musical and otherwise) to the one he was raised in, Moran always knew that what he wanted most was to return to the United Kingdom to play a part in a more cutting-edge and committed music scene than Australasia could offer him. He achieved this goal by taking up residence in Edinburgh in early 2006, and beginning his musical career at a passionate pace which reflects his desire to accomplish a great deal as an artist.
In his own words, Alex wants to ‘find his place amongst the classic British songwriters’. As a committed Anglophile, Alex’s music draws from England’s greatest modern song writing influences such as John Lennon, Marc Bolan and Noel Gallagher. A fine craftsman of raw and real Indie with classic pop undertones, Moran’s appreciation of and search for the perfect lyrical and musical hook also led him to absorb influences away from his homeland, particularly from American song writing icons Bob Dylan and Ryan Adams.
Since his return home, Alex has spent the last two years maintaining his firm commitment to gigging across the UK. He has gained invaluable live experience entertaining audiences at a wide range of prestigious venues including Glasgow’s Barfly, Barrowlands 2 & The Captain's Rest, the cutting-edge Cedar Room in the heart of Islington, Cabaret Voltaire and Jools Holland’s Jam House in his local Edinburgh. In July, Alex was invited to be interviewed and perform on Glasgow’s Sunny Govan radio station, an event which was broadcast live to the world via the internet.
In the Autumn of 2007 Moran crossed the Scottish border to England and finished recording six tracks at Shearwater Digital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Alex arranged his songs so that he could be accompanied on the recordings by a full band of experienced musicians recruited from across the British Isles, and the finished songs have taken their place on his Bus Shelter Blues EP.
Since The Seven Deadly Sins formed in early 2008, they have played a number of high profile gigs in both Edinburgh and Glasgow. However, since lead guitarist Donald Campbell joined the band in late May, the songs have taken on a new dimension; with an added resonance from his intricate guitar work. Importantly like Moran, Campbell’s love of classic songwriting, compliments the band’s lyrical strength and rock and roll roots. The addition of James Fletcher on drums has seen the song arrangements quickly develop, whilst not taking away from the strength of the songs written by Moran and increasingly by both Moran and Campbell. The Seven Deadly Sins are about to enter the studio to record for the first time in the next month or so.
"...'Cocaine Soul' is a cautionary tale from the dank depths. "A cocaine soul's gonna steal your rock and roll". If there's one thing this man has,it's dapp. He is 100% more dapper than the rest of the world’…he could ascend into the giddy heights of rock stardom…He
could even get a great album out of it!" Out the Bedroom, Edinburgh ..
