China White

About Me

China White. The name of the heroin that killed Darby Crash. Sometime in early 1981, when the Southern California hardcore punk scene was in it’s earliest days, out of Huntington Beach, Orange County came the notorious China White. Infamous for violent gigs and their blazing hardcore punk anthems with a curious blend of metal-riffage, China White were among the earliest bands in the emerging HC scene along with Black Flag, Fear, The Circle Jerks, The Minutemen and various others. The majority of the bands coming out of Huntington Beach were labeled as violent "beach punks". Along with T.S.O.L., China White contributed to this image. Describing themselves as a "black-leather band" it wasn’t uncommon for fights and brawls to erupt at their shows. China White played out in the Southern California reigion for some time. Eventually signing to Lisa Fancher’s Frontier Records, they released their ’Danger Zone’ 12"EP sometime in 1981. A solid record with a rad front cover (of a murder scene in which Edward Culver encountered after a Fear show). The band continued to play out and were on various compilations such as New Underground’s ’Life is Ugly - So Why Not Kill Yourself?’ LP and ’Life Is Beautiful - So Why Not Eat Health Foods?’ LP. By 1985, China White had fizzled out, but the damage was done and they had left their mark on hardcore punk history. In 1993, China White reformed. Around this time, they released an album called ’Addiction’ (on Lethal Records). The lineup on this record consisted of Frank Ruffino (Guitar), Corey Stretz (Bass), Jeff Porter (Vocals), and James Lugo (Drums). They committed to no less than three tours and once again disbanded. The purpose of this MySpace is to expose others to China White and their (short, but excellent) legacy. This is NOT An official China White site - just a tribute page. None of the members of China White run this page.
