About Me

MUSICALLY SPEAKING: I began learning the fine art of the low-end at the tender age of eleven after picking up my father's Rickenbacker and tentatively squeaking out Sunshine of Your Love. This evolved into not only a passion but a lifestyle as I began performing in band, orchestra, and jazz choir throughout high school. I braved the halls of the music department at Boise State University while performing in orchestra, jazz choir, electric guitar ensemble, classical guitar ensemble, and symphonic winds eventually becoming the first person to graduate from the university with a Bachelor of Music in Performance with an emphasis in electric bass. I also received the honor of twice performing in the Chair's Honor Recital. It was during my adventures in academia that I happened upon two guys playing music on a grassy knoll in the middle of campus. I stopped to listen and after a time asked if they needed a bass player. They said yes--and so is the legend of the formation of the band Stella as it is known today.ABOUT ME: I am first and foremost an aficionado of fine beverages--particularly beer--although burbon, wine, martinis and coffee run a close second. In my free time I enjoy reading, harassing weiner dogs, lingering over a deeply complex cigar, eating sausage and other cured meats, watching action and fantasy-packed films, sleeping in, running in the foothills with friends, backpacking, fly-fishing, mountain biking, snowboarding, throwing raucous parties, and kicking my wife's ass at ping-pong. Mostly I enjoy doing NOTHING, because I'm rarely afforded the opportunity.MY FAVORITE PLACE TO BE: Either sitting on the beach in Manzanita smoking a cigar under the star-filled October night sky OR hanging out at Satchel's Grill on a hot summer evening, sipping beer and catching whatever movie is playing on the wall.

Band Members: STELLA: Since 1994 audiences in Boise have been captivated by an astonishing phenomenon called Stella. This bewildering entity consists of myself on upright electric, 4 & 5-string electric, and 6-string fretless basses, Dan Costello on guitar and vocals, Scott Lindbloom on drums and back-up vocals, and Vincent Miresse on percussion and didjeridu. The essence of Stella is an electrifying mix of progressive folk, funk, rock and jazz elements--creating an atmosphere that showcases each member's extraordinary talent and extensive musical education.PLAN B: Members include myself, Dan Costello, and Pat Reed on drums while performing an eclectic mix of popular cover tunes and original music.HILL & COSTELLO: This duo involves teaming up with Dan Costello to produce a strikingly intimate, singer/songwriter sound for our audience.JEREMIAH JAMES GANG: This is a relatively new foray into a decidedly homegrown yet sophisticated old-country sound. Jeremiah James is an exceptionally talented singer/songwriter/guitarist whose major musical influences include Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and David Allen Coe to name a few. The "Gang" happily backing him up includes myself on electric upright bass, Dan Costello on guitar, banjo, harmonica, and back-up vocals, Vincent Miresse on percussion, and occasionally Scott Lindbloom on drums.RYAN PECK: I occasionally have the pleasure of performing with Ryan Peck, a local singer/songwriter/guitarist/hot chocolate aficionado whose influences are primarily contemporary pop/alternative artists. His heartfelt original songs and seemingly effortless yet sophisticated style resonate with audiences of various musical persuasions.I have had the pleasure of performing with Kelly Martin and Becca Gourley from Crash Four, Rebecca Scott, Ben Burdick, Sometimes Y, and the 6th Street Collective. I have also opened for Aqualung, Chris Boti, Carbon Leaf, Hot Buttered Rum, and Robert Earl Keen.
Influences: Victor Wooten, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Rush, Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, Mat Hansen, Oteil Burbridge, Michael Manring, Edgar Meyer, Vital Tech Tones, Barenaked Ladies, Dave Matthews, XEX, Jamiroquai, Nickel Creek, Sam Bush, Black Sabbath, Parliament, Yes, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Police, Primus, Phish, James Taylor, Jethro Tull, Gordon Lightfoot, Paul Simon, and everyone under "Band Members."
Sounds Like: STELLA: A healthy heaping of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, a dash of Dave Matthews, a sprinkling of Barenaked Ladies, a touch of Rush, and a savory side of John Gorka. (Who?)
