Lawndale Art Center is dedicated to the presentation of contemporary art with an emphasis on work by Houston area artists. Lawndale presents exhibitions, lectures and events to further the creative exchange of ideas among the region’s diverse, artistic, cultural and student communities.
From the beginning, all programming has been artist driven. Lawndale is governed by a Board of Directors representing the Houston community. One-third are artists or arts professionals. The Lawndale Programming Committee serves as a curatorial voice for Lawndale and meets twice annually to review proposals for exhibitions. Lawndale encourages exhibition proposals from artists and curators whose work is site-specific, traditional, non-traditional, experimental or collaborative. Exhibitions, special events and benefits are carried out with the invaluable assistance of volunteers, interns, work-study personnel and in-kind contributors.
Lawndale has four museum-quality galleries and three artist studios that facilitate its role as a vital cultural resource for Houston. Over 500 artists have their work presented at Lawndale annually. Along with individual and group shows, Lawndale hosts two open-call exhibitions every year, one juried by a nationally recognized curator.
Lawndale’s most recent programming initiative was to launch an Artist Studio Program that provides studio space for three local emerging artists. Lawndale also programs a variety of educational events throughout the year including performances, lectures, symposia and film screenings.
Lawndale also offers an internship program that gives individuals the opportunity to participate in almost every aspect of gallery operations alongside the Administrative Director, Exhibitions and Programming Director and the Executive Director.
Applications are accepted 3 times a year for Fall, Spring, and Summer.
