About Me

Christian Genzel

Often wrong, never uncertain.

Christian Genzel is a German filmmaker currently living in Salzburg, Austria. Born in 1978, Genzel studied English and American Studies at the University of Salzburg, where he graduated with distinction in 2004. During his studies, he worked as a student representative and studied screenwriting under M.S. Nieson at the University of Minnesota. He wrote his M.A. thesis on the films of John Carpenter.

Since 2000, Genzel has written and directed several short films and has worked on different film projects as a unit production manager, assistant director, and continuity. His film SCHLAFLOS (Sleepless), a 40-minute drama about love and music, has premiered in November 2006 and won an audience award at the 2007 film:riss festival. His mockumentary TUTMOSIS, a 10-minute peek into the world of an influential yet completely unknown artist, was selected to be included with the March 2008 issue of Austrian film magazine Celluloid.

From 2000 to 2005, Genzel was also a member of Salzburg's award-winning English Drama Group, appearing on stage in renditions of David Mamet's "The Blue Hour", Timberlake Wertenbaker's "Our Country's Good", Dylan Thomas' "Under Milk Wood", David Williamson's "Dead White Males", and Sue Townsend's "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole", the latter of which won the Ferdinand Eberherr award in 2005.

Genzel also works as a freelance writer. His music and movie reviews have appeared in the All-Music Guide, Salzburger Nachrichten, and other publications.

Besides all these endeavors, Genzel has also kept himself busy with music. In 2000, he self-released an album by his genre-bending electronica project sea39. With his experimental improv band Eternity Ltd., he played a number of concerts from 2000 to 2002. In 2006, he founded Ghost Light, a small indie label through which he has released several CDs by the Salzburg-based singer/songwriter project Betty's Apartment.

Christian Genzel is currently developing his first feature film, DIE MUSE (The Muse), to be shot in 2009. He is also working on a documentary feature called THE NUMETAL PHENOMENON.
