About Me

The four-part ‘Whispers in the Well’ project is a series of four linked parts. The first E.P. Part 1 is available now, with parts 2 – 4 to be released one-by-one in 2009.

I have been influenced greatly by Tori Amos’s songwriting and approach to her craft – the concept of a song as an architectural structure that needs to be inhabited, visualised and explored by the writer. Amos refers to her songs as ‘girls,’ personalities that may be of her, but are not her. Although I often write songs whose starting points are in my own experience, there comes a point where the song reveals its own personality, its own experience and I hope that I have come to recognise that transition and openly invite it.

I am also a published writer, my favourite form being the short story. I think similar methods apply there – a short story has a structure, not always apparent, although the strange thing is that, when writing, you get a sense of it existing somewhere already and it’s just a question of winning its trust. It’s not so much ‘dictation from God’ (He mumbles anyway...) as relying on intuition and setting ego aside – or at least judging when to.

Anyway, that all sounds rather high-faluting. I live in Morecambe; I navigate through the day via coffee breaks. I write, sing, knit, garden, draw, swim, teach, make soup, travel on buses. I have a beautiful beat-up ex-school issue cello that is trying to teach me to play her.

I also present ‘Words on the Waves,’ on Diversity Radio, showcasing local writers and their writing.

Prior to the Whispers in the Well project, I released album ‘Hating Baby,’ Tracy Don’t Take Sugar (EP) and two unofficial cds – ‘Little Fish,’ and ‘Bone box.’The Moll Baxter Band
