My Interests

Music, politics, food, books, things that are funny...

I love cooking for people -- come over and I'll make you dinner... Serious, I don't give a damn who you are.

I'd like to meet:

People to go to jazz bars and eat wacky food with.
People who don't just accept information as true because it has a footnote.
People who thought the Billy the Mime Abortion scene in "The Aristocrats" special features was hilarious.
People who know who Bill Hicks was.
People who can't find their favorite artist's CD at Wal-Mart.
People who yell out in rage after watching the State of the Union address.

Those are my people.

Music:

Hip-Hop:
MF DOOM, Blackalicious, Sage Francis, Lyrics Born, Lateef, The Foreign Exchange, Common (old shit), J-Live, Saul Williams, Cee-Lo, Goodie Mob, OutKast, Immortal Technique, The Coup, Public Enemy, Brother Ali, Aceyalone, Illogic, Myka Nine, Vakill, Wu-Tang Clan, Ultramagnetic MCs, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Artifacts, The Roots, Organized Konfusion, Nas, Madlib, Biz Markie, Little Brother, Lootpack, A Tribe Called Quest, KMD, Lord Finesse, Big L, Jay-Z, Hieroglyphics, Haiku D'Etat, El-P, Kool Keith, DJ Shadow, DJ Vadim, Diamond D, De La Soul, Dead Prez

Jazz, Blues, and Soul:
John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, Bill Evans, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk, Muddy Waters, Albert King, Albert Collins, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Freddie King, Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Luther Allison, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Jimmy Smith, Kenny Burrell, Django Reinhardt, Jaco Pastorius, Derek Trucks Band, T-Bone Walker

Everything Else:
Nick Drake, The Czars (before they broke up..), DeVotchKa, Jimi Hendrix, Van Morrison, TOOL, Sublime, Damian Marley, I Wayne, Radiohead, Mr. Bungle, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Velvet Underground, Jeff Buckley, Godspeed You Black Emperor!

Movies:

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Rabbit-Proof Fence, Memento (the first time), Monty Python (Holy Grail/Life of Brian), Office Space, Pulp Fiction, Breakfast With Hunter, Reservoir Dogs, Waking Life (it's nice to look at), Amelie, Pi, Requiem for a Dream, Sweet & Lowdown

I need to see more movies...

Television:

THE WIRE (!!!!!), THE OFFICE, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Da Ali G Show, Adult Swim (ATHF, The Brak Show, and old Sealab are my favorites)

Books:

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (if you haven't read this, GO NOW!)

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Kingdom of Fear, On the Road, Junkie, Desolation Angels, People's History of the United States, Manufacturing Consent, L'Estranger (The Stranger -- Albert Camus), Tropic of Cancer, The First Third (Neal Cassady -- has lots of seedy Denver history too), 1984, Brave New World, Doors of Perception, Food of the Gods, Archaic Revival...

Seriously, I can't recommend One Hundred Years of Solitude enough. I've read it 3 or 4 times, and I still get new things out of it. One of the best books of the 20th Century.

Heroes:

Hunter S. Thompson, Bill Hicks, Jimi Hendrix, Richard Pryor, Charles Bukowski, Howard Zinn...

You probably wanted me to put Gandhi or Martin Luther King Jr. -- well, they're on everybody's permanent hero list unless you're some kind of idiot... so they go without saying.

No love for Mother Teresa or various Popes though. Africa says, "Thanks, ya fucks."
