Continually. Through college. Now.I slide. I dive. I've been hit in the face by the ball. I have scars on my knees. My elbows. My legs. I broke my middle finger on my right hand. A hard hit ball knocked my knuckle off the joint. I still played. Held my bat with my middle finger straight up. The pitchers didn't like it. They couldn't stop me from hitting the ball.My closet is full of championship tee shirts, worn cleats, scuffed bats, frayed softballs. These things tumble out every time I open the door. I collect trophies, big and small. They're in cardboard boxes on the wall shelves in my garage, above the pile of bat bags that lie on the floor.Recently someone told me, "If you were a guy you could play professional baseball." Instead, I put on a dress, brush my hair, slip on my sling-back leather shoes and drive to work, thinking the whole time about softball; thinking about playing softball as I drive through every green light, yellow light, red light; thinking about playing the perfect game; about playing my perfect game.
