I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

I was first interest in Music and DJ..ing @ 9 yrs old, back in the UK. Bought 1st record MFSB -The sound of Philadelphia. 45 RPM. Parents both played Blues, Folk and collected music. Parents liked was Blues , Muddy Waters, Lightning Hopkins, R+B, Soul, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Beatles, Hendrix, Beach Boys.On UK Radio, first heard BARRY WHITE and JOHNNY BRISTOL. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------ Came to CANADA with family. My dream of becoming a DJ was reality by 19. At which time bought Two Technics 1200..s. Through working, managing record shops. This led to setting up a dance music store ODYSSEY IMPORTS in Vancouver (Which mainly sold Rock/Punk before he came). This was the first Hip Hop /House/Dance Record Shop in Vancouver.. Was DJ..ing in several underground clubs in Vancouver including the original Club Soda.------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------ Getting a lot of work as LOVE JONES DISCO. w/ the JAZZMANIAN DEVILS playing Rare Groove and Disco. Dennis, lead Singer, thought i needed a name to DJ all the Rare Groove, Soul,Disco gigs with. It was Dennis who came up with the name LOVE JONES. DJ..ing continued here in Vancouver in the late 80..s doing UNDERGROUND parties. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------- Anxious to return to his British roots, he decided take a trip back to England where i met COLDCUT @ Reckless records ( Where Jon ,Matts partner, used to work ) Matt Black(COLDCUT)had a real interest in rare groove and i was well into it. I remember watching Matt DJ @ his House. Matt could really mix Hip Hop style. Scratching and overlay. Matt played the legendary mix "Say kids what time is it? And promised to send Ten copies in the mail to Canada. kept in touch with Coldcut, sold them records, and COLDCUT started to get very well known. ------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------Returned to England leaving ODYSSEY in 1989. To live for 9 months. To hang out and Meet PATRICK FORGE, (through COLDCUT) and also meeting GILLES PETERSON (through Patrick who worked @ RECKLESS RECORDS). Patrick's record collection (checked it out one time) of Soul Jazz and Latin was off the hook. Enjoyed Sunday afternoons @ DINGWALLS .What a wonderful learning experience. PATRICK AND GILLES played wonderful Jazz, Soul and Latin DANCE MUSIC. Like no one ever before. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------- At a COLDCUT record release party, met, proceeded to hanging out with, go to, w/NORMAN JAY..s nights weekly. Norman was nice enough to give me a ride to the Monday nights often picking me up in Kensington before being wisked away too the other side of Town. (MONDAY RARE GROOVE and THURSDAYS @ DINGWALLS) Norman was, is very passionate, knowledgeable about music and life. I appreciate the support Norman and Coldcut gave me during my nine month visit. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------- After nine months returned to Vancouver. In 1989. first Dj gig back was called "Wig Out" with jazz funk band Soul Crib. ------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------For a couple of years Started the now legendary Radio Show http://www.africanrhythmsradio.com/ in 1994. On the show i have interviewed Rachelle Ferrell, DJ SMASH, Nanette Natal, Maya Azucena and a host of others live and phone in. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------- Around this time i started to make collage mixes of literary people over music like Henry Miller was one of my favorites . Most of these mixes i used a cassette player to do any edits. Some of these mixes can be found here. http://www.africanrhythmsradio.com/DJMixes.php Sun Ra, Lonnie Liston smith and Pharoah Sanders were my heroes so there music was very suitable for overlaying quotes + wisdom . Some of these literary influences can be seen in my Mixtapes 1 , 2 and 3 @ My Site http://www.africanrhythmsradio.com/Radio.php..Shows ------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------Started the night the BOTTLE . In 1996 @ the Pic Pub.With DJ Clarence .A Jazz Dance, Nu Jazz, House, Disco, Latin, Brazil, Soul night which lasted three memorable years. And by all reports a huge success. It was in a unique vintage pub environment. and invited many great guests including DJ..s.MARCUS WYATT, DJ SMASH, JULIUS PAPP, ANDREW JERVIS.. and some live musicians.-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------- Since then have been DJ..ing , running africanrhythmsradio show on CITR RADIO and running VINYL Records Shop in Downtown Vancouver. A Record Shop specializing in Soul, Jazz, Latin, Electronica, Breaks ,Rock, House, Disco and pretty well everything else.and Cycling (Road Racing with help from a Coach) ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------- David organized a DJ benefit for the late Shawna Stadius in 2003. The event was with key Vancouver DJ..s . Dicky Doo, Todd Omatani , Vernon , Jason Lev etc. WE raised some money for Shawna and came together as a DJ Community to show our support. Shawna has passed away . Yet the love she radiated will live with all of us forever.---------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------- In 2003 played Wesley Snipes, West Vancouver, Party in Aug . It was a very special night . Dropping the tracks and chatting with Wesley. http://www.africanrhythmsradio.com/images/records/Wesley_Sni pes_Autograph_Bla.jpg ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------- Also in 2004, been working with UBC Club Brazil. Playing an all Brazilian selection. Along with two Bands. Also been playing with DJ Eden and Mark @ the Alibi Room Fridays including headlining a sold out Show 2004 New Years Eve. Playing Jazz, Funk, Disco , Soul , Latin , new and old. ------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------- As well as a Host of other one off events . in 2005 DJ..d a "One off" "Summer Jump off Party" in May with DJ Mark and Eden.
