Caulk (1991-1998)

About Me

Caulk was the first band signed to One Ton Records in 1994. Their first release was an e.p. titled Learn to Take featuring Mike Malinin (now in the Goo Goo Dolls ) on drums. It was recorded and mixed by Sam McCall at Resin Studios in Denton, TX. After its release, Caulk became known as a part of the "Fraternity of Noise" (along with "frat brothers" Baboon and Brutal Juice ). This was a term used by local papers to describe the new rock sounds coming from Denton, TX in the early nineties. In October of '95, the band released their first full-length entitled Love American Style . This record was a departure from the sounds of Learn in that the songwriting became more tuneful and complex with less aggro-screaming. This album put Caulk on the map both in Texas as well as nationally. With such memorable tunes as "Take it Down" and "Little Man" , the band took their show on the road with months of endless touring. If you ever saw Caulk perform, then you know that the band could get a little out of control. Aden Holt (vocal, guitar) had been known to travel from the stage and visit audiences personally. Imagine a 6 foot 9 inch sweaty guy with mic in hand, belting out vocals from unexpected places like standing on the bar, hanging from the rafters, or visiting the ladies room. The band became known for their incredibly tight tempo changes (courtesy of Joe Fulginiti and Keith Sharp ), quirky guitar sounds (a la Marcus Bloom ) as well as Aden's "personal touch". After two years of relentless performing, the band went back in the studio to record their third release, Imaginary Enemy . This album was released in April of 1998. It showed the same songwriting technique as Love with much bolder production and punch (produced by Duane Trower of Season To Risk and Tobasco ). This album also digs into a darker side of the band to reveal some pretty moving lyrics and strong sense of emotion. Check out "Pretty Penny" and "Hopeless/Uncertain" . After several months of touring, Caulk played their last show on October 2nd of 1998 in Dallas. It was quite a celebration. We will miss them!
