I'm a musician, a keyboard player, from Detroit, Michigan, one of the great music meccas on this planet. I've been playing since I was about 4 years old, and I've been playing in public since I was 10. I began playing in church, but later joined a bunch of bands playing many different styles of music. That coincided with my diverse listening taste--I liked to listen to a lot of different music. Growing up, there were many musicians and bands in town. As a musician, you couldn't help being influenced by what everyone around you was doing. In the 70's, there were plenty of live bands, some with horn sections, other people doing the acoustic folk thing. Funk was really big, and there were many jazz stars who emerged from Detroit and became national and international stars, or played with people who were. I like playing jazz, funky music, funky blues, and I made up my own category for my own music that I call Urban Progressive. The long name would be World-Age-Acid-Trip-Hop-Jazz. My band project is called PhilHarmonic, and that is also my stage name. I've released a few different recordings under my own production: Supernatural (1989); Give 'Em Hale! (1991); Urban Symphonies (1999); Beyond (2001). There is newer music, but I'm still trying to make those productions what they need to be before making an official new release. In the meantime, I have a primary gig playing with funky rockin' blues diva, Thornetta Davis, who is blessed with one of the best voices in America. Talk about your talent deserving wider recognition... These days, I am more busy in the playing scene than holing up in my basement recording. I've always dug playing live, with musicians who you can't control but who are good and you must interact with them. I go through phases. And there are lots of great musicians here to interact with. My favorite clubs are The Buzz, Bert's Marketplace and Baker's Keyboard Lounge. I like The Buzz because of the diversity of genres and the high level of musicians who play there. Bert's and Baker's are for jazzin' it up. Musicians around this town like to play, and they will show up at jam sessions and each other's gigs, and we just have a good time checking each other out and swimming in the musical ocean that we're all parts of. I also like to write. I make newsletters when I have time and the feeling hits me, and I send it out to my group. I guess that's part of what I'm on MySpace for.
