"I write for the same reason I breathe — because if I didn't, I would die. — Isaac Asimov
Tavis Brunson a.k.a. “The Minister†is a native of Columbia, SC. He began writing in high school around the age of 15, starting with raps of a secular nature and received high grades on English assignments when he exercised his poetic gift. While attending college in Atlanta, he began writing on more Christian subjects. When he moved back to SC, he turned his talents to songwriting for budding gospel group, Complete. After that, he took a hiatus from writing for a few years, except for the occasional poem here and there.
He moved to Orlando, FL in 1999 and in 2002 his writing was re-born from great spiritual and emotional trials. In finding this new voice, his writing evolved into a spoken word style and he first performed this new work in church. At the urging of some friends, he attended his first open mic in Orlando; he was very well received and it was on…his spoken word career began.
He was a 3 time member of the nationally ranked Columbia Poetry Slam Team (www.ColumbiaSlam.com) , 2006 Southern Fried Champions. He was also the 2006 Columbia Grand Slam Champion. He relocated to Charlotte in '06 and became a member of the 2007 National Poetry Slam Champions, SlamCharlotte (www.SlamCharlotte.com), (who subsequently earned the title of National Champions 2 years in a row!). He was the 2008 slammaster of the city’s 2nd slam team, Respect Da Mic, 2007 Southern Fried Champions and National Semi-finalists. He represented Charlotte, NC at the 2005 Individual World Poetry Slam (iWPS) in Worchester, MA where he was a finalist ranking 12th in the world. In 2006 he represented Columbia at the iWPS held in Charlotte, NC and again made it to the finals, placing 5th in the world.
He recently did a video with Billy Graham Ministries that can be seen on www.passageway.org.
Tavis has featured in churches, family and community events, open mics, slams and talent shows all over the nation. Not one to limit his God-given gifts to a stage and a mic, he also teaches workshops in countless schools and universities. He is a favorite in the poetry circuit and loves to host.
He is a member of The Concrete Generation (www.ConcreteGeneration.org) and Touch One Productions (www.Touch1Productions.com), a collective of artists based currently in Charlotte, NC.
He has a full length CD entitled "Sanctuary" and DVD, "Musings of a Concrete Minister", both available online at www.myspace.com/Tavis|Brunson. He is also working on a number of different projects including his 2nd CD, “Concrete Ministry-Live at the Art Houseâ€, a live DVD and a novel in the works.
